  • Chick built wheels also

  • Just seen this post.
Barry lives around Barnet still cycling as far as I know. You can still buy new Chicks for about 2k per frame but I don't think Barry makes them himself anymore.
I have this one which is in 531 special lightweight. Seems to ride faster than other similar steel I've had before.
I am prob going to sell the frame any day now as I have just bought a Bill Nickson from lfgss and will be keeping that instead (only so much room)

  • Hi i have two Barry Chic built frames, one is a Columbus tubed 61cm road frame built for me in 1977.
It was ordered through my friend's cycle shop and has his shop's name on it, the other frame is again a Columbus tubed 61cm example built for me in 1991 and is a compact.
Both of these frames seen any serious action as by then i was an old crock and riding vets races.
I still have my Vic Edwards built Condor from 1968, now that did see plenty of action in Star trophy events and in Dutch, Belgian, French and Irish classics, but thats another story ........

  • I would like to hear the other story too.

  • but thats another story ........

    C'mon, don't be a tease...

  • Re. my 1968 Condor ( Frame No. 6810 ). I raced this bike during the 68/69 seasons both here and abroad. A friend and mentor ( Frank O'Flaherty ) collected it from Monty at the beginning of the year and I had it assembled with my existing Campag. groupset and Books Pro Saddle in no time at all.
It's a 24inch road frame with Campag. ends and cable guides for bar end levers and was finished in Condor-Mackeson team colours ( Lilac and White )
I only ever had one bad crash on it and that was in the Chequers Grand Prix when i was chasing down Peter Buckley , I hit a cow pat in the middle of a blind bend at the bottom of a hill and disappeared under a fence, needless to say that by the time service had dragged me out covered in cow s** the race had long gone and with a bent gear hanger and open cuts full of dung it was a trip to A&E.
The frame was mended a lot quicker than my elbow but did not stop me from racing and like all trusty steeds she carried me through the rest of the 1969 race season.
When I retired in 1973 I lent the frame to a promising young local rider and several years later i bumped into him and he told me that he had only used it for a short while as it was a bit too big but he still had it in his loft. He gave it back to me and as a thank you had had it repainted in metallic purple !!!!
I am now about to start restoring it and that will include re-finishing it in it's original colours'

    Watch this space.

P.S. I have noticed that the frame number is not preceded by a V ( Vic Edwards ) so could this mean it's a Bill Hurlow frame ? Hmmmmmmmm investigation reqd. me thinks.

  • 'Mackeson'
cannot remember the last time I heard that brand name1
    Thanks for the story.

  • I am now about to start restoring it...

Make a thread in Current Projects please.

    And great story too.

  • What is the going rate for a Reynolds 653 Barry Chick built shorter frameset? Mudguard and rack fittings if that makes a difference. I'm reluctantly looking to sell mine as its a little bit t0o small.

  • If anyone wants to know more about chick frames go to shorter rochford cycles in potters bar!

  • I saw Barry today, he is still cycling and still lives in barnet! Such a lovely man x

  • I saw Barry on Wednesday he is looking well

  • I have a Barry chick road bike with campag group set 1980s great condition for sale
