I liked this thread until the slanging started.. it wasn't very focussed, had people asking about £200 jackets, and anoraks from uniqlo, but it was quite interesting and nice. bah.
btw, my Gore Bike Wear Power II womens jacket is waterproof, this pleases me, but not very breathable. no bother, it's light enough to stash away. I've had enough of 'shower-proofs'. it's a bit short maybe. and a sleeve/front mini pocket would be nice, but hey.

Personally I think we need a new post modern paradigm. The breathable, waterproof goal is a post war illusion. Why?
-how often do you get cold from the wind? Every day.
-how often do you get sweaty from riding? Every day.
-how often do you get rain so bad it soaks through to the skin? Maybe once or twice every winter.
-is there any fabric that is truly breathable and waterproof to the extent you need it to be when cycling moderately hard? No.The real solution is a windproof softshell with some shower protection. Like the Endura Windchill, just for example. Has roubaix back for breathability.
On the times it rains so hard the drains back up then get off and wait in a shop door way. OR just get a bit wet. Both Gore and polartec have devolped new maerials, which breath dynamically (shite description). Basically a standard jacket membrane like gore-tex relies on an imbalance of vapour pressure to drive body moisture through the membrane. This is a poor system for high activity use (hense pit zips on shell jackets)The new materials allow air and vapour flow, while still being windproof (So the jackets dont need pit zips). They are said to be a lot more rainproof than a standard softshell. But not watertight like a shell jacket.
I'm looking to buy a Rab stretch neo shell jacket. Not for bike use TBH. But I reckon it would make a good UK winter jacket material.

I've bought the Castelli Pazzo jacket, and loving it so far.
http://castelli-cycling.com/en/products/detail/591/
Windproof fabric with a shower resistant coating and detachable sleeves. I've been riding in to work with a long sleeve base layer underneath and a bag on my back, and being slightly too warm in the current temps. Riding back home in the afternoon with the sleeves off, acting as a gillet over my base layer. £135 from most online retailers

got one - its like a softshell/jersey hybrid - the marketing blah for it is impressively hyperbolic. For the record it is a considerable distance from being comparable to a Rapha softshell.
Oh and the quality is pretty meh too - put it on, flexed my awesome muscles and blew the stitching out at the neck. I'm going to fix it myself because I'm pretty sure the replacement would have the same issue...

Long shot but...Does anyone have a DHB Wickham Event jacket (from last year - Discontinued now) in Small (preferrably in black) that they'd like to sell, or swap for my Black Medium (no defects)?
The jacket is perfect for me, but I need a size down now...

I have rain-proof garment that is truly 'breathable', not a jacket though, but Carradice's rain cape. Absolutely wonderful, keeps hands and bars dry too.
For not-rainproof gear but a wintrish cycling jersey/jacket I've just invested all of a measly £45 in one of these from Tudor Sports, and I'm really, really pleased with it:

I bought one of these off fleabay for £33

So far i'm really impressed. It's breathable, windproof and very warm. Haven't been out in the rain in it yet though (but i have a sailing gilet by the same co. and that's very water resistant, so i'm expecting good things). I really like the internal cuff thingys -completely keeps the wind out and my wrists warm

Yeah also the fit is pretty tight. I haven't used it properly yet since I've been on the Brompton so far this week. But hopefully will give it a go tomorrow. Yes it's not a winter jacket! Having said that, coupling this a base layer and perhaps a loose flo jacket it will do nicely in light showers with a small temperature drop. social is quite right it is more of a softshell jersey hybrid - if you are after something to just keep you warm, then it might fit the bill.

I've only been wearing it after the sun has gone down, I 'd have to be a reptile or 102 with no circuation to have been wearing it during the day time :0)

PX jacket got it's first wet outing today. Really impressed so far!
I've had time to think about that comment, and wonder if indeed I hadn't followed the meaning of the thread at all, or worse, hadn't actually looked hard enough for a good cycling jacket, upon which I could give an opinion, in the spirit with the rest of the thread.
So this is what I have come up with. First of all, NONE of the following makes fit me, and therefore cannot be an ultimate cycling jacket for me at all. Unless I was mistaken to think that the discussion was for anyone, and not just people that weighed less than 14 stone, for example?
Altura
Assoss
Campagnolo
Castelli
Funkier
Gore Bike Wear
Inov-8
Montane
Polaris
Rab
Rapha
Sportful
And what would I have to wear to actually be in a cycling specific jacket to compare to others? Only the AeroTechDesigns Windproof Thermal Jacket. And if Keela jackets fit me, I'd rather wear those instead. Since we're all different sizes and shapes, its no surprise that an ultimate riding/cycling jacket would be reflective of this fact. Those who are lucky enough to wear Rapha should not be so quick to dismiss those who cannot. Anyone that really knows me on this forum, knows that I am a real cyclist. Ask anyone that sees me often on my travels through London.
Apols to all except ada, as this elitist nonsense was a irritant that required a response.
