agreed with hippy, your body needs to get used to working and processing liquid well, if not used to aerobic exercise it may take a while.
water for normal days, short rides.
High 5 has been rated more highly than other powders as it contains fructose and glucose- which is marginally better for competing athletes.
i like the SIS sachets with caffeine- for the concentration during racing.
they are minging though really. -

Go DIY. Copy a formula. Choose your own flavour. End up with about 5-6kg for the price of 1.5kg in the brand names. F. T. W.

@BMMF - you got any recipes?

I usually have a standard size bottle of water per hour. If it's hot I need more, if it's cold I need less.
Now then, with all these gels and powders and shizz, how do they hydrate you more than water? are they not taking up the space of more water? bear in mind that I haven't done any science in over 20 years, can someone explain in simple terms the benefits of these magical substances? Some of you have met me - you know what level to pitch the answer at.

They contain electrolytes and salts etc which you lose when you perspire. Water alone can not replace them.

If you want really cheap High 5 drinks you can get the Race Faster packs here for £2.99 which is 5 drinks and two gels. I got a load and they are fairly random with whether you get normal or caffeine gels and the mix of drinks.
High 5 also have their own version of Nuun tabs now £6.29 for 20 but I do want to try banana Nuun

I've use Nuuns, but have reverted to a generous pinch of sea-salt, which contains a lot of the same trace elements.
My costs-fuck-all DIY energy formula at the minute is: maltodextrin, fructose, sea salt, optional caffeine (for longer rides & fat burning, or evening rides where I don't have coffee first), elderflower cordial. I may switch to ginger cordial in the winter - depends what the sports scientists have to say about it over the coming months ;)
Another good budget rehydrater is just water with a splash of cyder vinegar and a pinch of sea salt. Loads of goodness, and you're not paying for little plastic tubes.

Well for short bursts of exercise anyways, if you can't get hold of any HRS...
Vitargo is the next best thing:http://www.myprotein.co.uk/bulk-powders/carbohydrates/vitargo-pure/
probably best used after you've finished riding though or when you desperately need carbs, asit has a super high absorption rate, for long duration stuff, I highly recommend Palatinose, or if you are burning serious calories potentially a mix of palatinose and Vitargo could work well, I would say a 2:1 ratio of Vitargo to Palatinose would probably be optimum for most endurance sports. -

My protein also offer the ability to create custom blends at a pretty damn good price, including custom flavouring, i've used them many times over the years, highly recommended.

I use 4 cups of maltodextrine (powdered corn syrup), 1 cup of fructose, 2 level teaspoons of pectin (for gel consistency) and 4 level teaspoons of salt.
Mix dry ingredients thoroughly!then place in a saucepan
then add 145 ml of water
stir over a very low heat
when thoroughly dissolved pour into a measuring cup and add water until the total volume is 870 ml. This is enough for 29 serves. (calorie content has been calculated; read on)
At this stage I add a few drops of a food colouring so I can easily see the amount in the bottle.
I then fill the small bottles sold for gels at runners shops, ideally get the Hammer Gel ones as this recipe has the same calorie content per volume. One serve each half hour, with 400ml of plain water. The water helps flush the taste from your mouth. If you don't like the taste add some flavouring or just HTFU
If you don't take the required amount of water you will have a science experiment going on in your stomach. Same reason you do not take other high carb foods with the gel. On a long ride, like a 210 km in a day ride, if I want some solids I substitute a Powerbar for a gel, not have both for the same time period.
The Hammer Gel booklet is a worthwhile read for what you need on a long ride. In PDF form hereany questions?

From my research, during a ride of over 2 hours, quick energy is needed. Protein is desirable after a ride for muscle repair. It is set out in that Hammer Gel PDF link.
