  • The one time I had a problem with Veloplugs was using a tyre substantially wider than the rim + relatively low pressure, which is pretty much a definition of XC equipment.

    Had considered this TBH.
I'm planning on running 2.55 tyres on 28mm wide rims at about 30 psi. I've test mounted the tyres without inners, and while them seem pretty tight, there is a definitly room for the bead to move up and down. I going to have to start these wheels off carefully for a few reasons...:S

Personally, I wouldn't touch any of the 'fake-tubeless' solutions with a ten foot pole. For me, it has to the real thing - Mavic Fore-drilled UST rims - and then there is no tape required.

Agree, that if you're in the process of building wheels, with a side thought of trying tubeless at some point, it seems silly to us standard rims.I just did'nt see any tubeless specific 29er rims that I liked.

  • Leccy tape.

I don't think there are any yet. From what I've read about 29ers, I'd be waiting for a 29er version of the Mavic EX823 before jumping aboard, ideally with 36 holes.

  • Leccy tape.

    +1

  • Although it may melt/move in hot weather, causing punctures. Allegedly.

  • That shouldn't cause any problems here then ;)

  • I don't get it... seems to me that a lot of people think it's dead clever to be tight. Why not just get some Velox and have peace of mind? It costs about no pounds.

This is were my definition of true tubeless rims may fall down.
But the four main off-road rims from Stans no-tubes (ZTR Oly, ZTR 355, ZTR flow, ZTR arch) all have one 29er edition (All of these rims require rim strips to be run tubeless though). Thats 32H only. All of these rims were too narrow for my taste, except the flow. Which is 28mm wide, claimed to be 525g, and reputed to be pretty bloody bomb proof. Would have got some if the price was'nt so steep. The Velocity blunts I bought, were 1/2 the price and 50g lighter, with pretty much the same dimensions (and hopefully not made of cheese).

    Bact to rim tape...
I have Velox on my fixed, but that doesnt see much rain.

On the utility bike (which sees lots of shite weather), I have cheap plastic stuff. This has perished in several spots, so I can comfirm that water does creep in to this area. I'll be replacing this with some more water resistant rubbery tape when I fit the winter tyres.

  • Cut up an old inner tube, always worked for me.

  • Velox on all 13 of my bikes seems to work fine

  • These http://www.noahsark.co.uk/specialized-rim-tape-p-3135.html work well for me. All one piece which stretch over the rim.

Large garage? or very cramped house!

  • I tried electrical tape once (two layers I think), got a flat and then saw the tape had been pushed right through the holes by the pressure from the tube. Too stretchy.

  • I use electrical tape on mine no probs, cant remember how many layers I put on tho

Same here, 1 layer, no problems.

  • Tight bastards...

  • pape tape

  • Come on guys, this is serious business.

  • Large garage? or very cramped house!

Cramped garage ,two in my van, kids bikes in shed!

  • pape tape

    Hah!

  • Same here, 1 layer, no problems.

I've always used leccy tape, but wrap it around like 5 times, again, never had a problem. It's not being tight, getting 4 wears out of your undies whilst hanging your teabags out to dry is being tight.

  • like 5 times what 4 or 6 like?

  • unless you have a good weight weenie excuse, use velox.

never had a problem with it, unlike most other forms of rim tape.

  • velox or the conti rim tape have both been fine for me
