  • Question about Merino wool and smell - I have some Rapha* merino base layers. They have a very, very slight scent of cat-pee to them, even after washing. This is as a result of the remnant lanolin in the wool, no?

*Nice and not too pricey - bought the bundle.

  • no, its the smell of sheep

it fades with time, but is worse when they are new and warm

do not wash merino with conditioner - unless you wish to kill its insulating and wicking properties

  • Oh good. Nice to know it fades. All cycling stuff gets washed sans conditioner. As should your bath towels too BTW.

    Ta DJ.

  • all new wool smells when it gets wet doesn't it? wet sheep smell :)

  • Aldi yesterday were/are selling merino tops and longjohns. Adult tops are short sleeved and kids are long sleeved.

  • Was bought a Howies merino vest for my birthday. Nice, but not sure I can that look off. Might try and exchange it - was bought online but have receipt. Think the shop will change it to long sleeve if I pay the extra?

I don't know if you've exchanged this already but I've just received an email saying that because of massive rent increases the Carnaby St shop will be closing its doors for the last time on Christmas Eve (Saturday 24th December).

Until then, there will be a closing down sale, with 50% off all items in store only.

Sad when the little guy folds.

  • They were bought out by timberland a few years ago.

Yeah, I just saw the same email. My girlfriend is coming up for Christmas on Wednesday, but I'm working right up to Christmas Eve now - I'll see if I can get her to pop in. If not I'll just keep the vest and use it under ls stuff on really, really cold days.

They were but they're still the same people running the company.

  • not any more. left a while ago and they've since started the do lectures

  • website is down - coincidence?

  • Seems fine to me.

  • back up now

  • bought Endura baa baa base layer and i am sold on merino front! its an amazing fabric! Better than anything out there for temperature control and non-stink factor. The only minus point I'd say is that it produces a lot of static electricity :P

  • My merino seems to lose it's "cosy factor" after awhile. Might be too hot washing, maybe wax/oil build up: anyone else have this problem? I've been wearing the stuff ever since Stanfields came out with their 90/10 mix in the early 80s, and honestly that range seems to last and retain it's effectiveness the longest, though it is the least comfortable of any company's product that I've tried.
