  • I'd say take it slow.
Maybe put them in adjoining cages so that they can get used to each other's scent and look, followed by short walks (on leash only). Lots of treats along the way, you want these boys to associate good times with each other!
Remember, have fun and relax, we're making friends here!

solid advice for any hi-fi purchase.

  • Does anyone want to buy a very nice 1970's top-end turntable?

Pioneer, comes with a stanton cartridge. The platter is sprung to get rid of vibrations.

  • The Tannoys and the NAD are the best bet out of that lot IMO (never really got on with those Cambridge Audio amps - always sounded a bit turgid to me)

What on earth is this supposed to mean?

Swollen and distended or congested: "a turgid and fast-moving river".
(of language or style) Tediously pompous or bombastic: "some turgid verses on the death of Prince Albert".

  • 320kbps MP3s at a minimum.

I can hear a massive difference between mp3's (even at 320kb) and CD's

Maybe my problem is source though, as I always use a very small mp3 player or a phone as source for mp3 playing.

  • And don't be fooled by spending a shit load on cables. Only get what your system needs.

Do you know what kind of sound you want from the speakers?

    True dat, cables are cables.

What you're hearing is probably more to do with the analogue output of the MP3 player/phone.

  • disclaimer I know nothing about hifis

So, got some technics speakers off fleabay.
    Info on add:
Rated at 100 watts music into 8 ohms 50 watts RMS

I have 60 quid to spend on an amp. Will any amp work? Decent make of amp? Wll Someone sell me one?

  • look upthread, good advice there

  • I can hear a massive difference between mp3's (even at 320kb) and CD's

No you can't. Science has been unable to prove that their is any audible difference between 320k MP3 and uncompressed audio at 16bit 44100k (CD quality). Source DA conversion is likely to be the culprit.

  • Anyone knows what speakers were used in Bruce Nauman's installation 'days'?

  • Before I pull the trigger, anybody selling a turntable?

  • Before I pull the trigger, anybody selling a turntable?

nope - but what you buying?

  • Anyone knows what speakers were used in Bruce Nauman's installation 'days'?

    NXT perhaps?

Look to be too thin to use cone drivers, eg PMC Wafers.
    Maybe NXT SoundpaX

  • nope - but what you buying?

Nothing expensive. Based upon the recommendations of others, looking at things like a dual 504 or 505. Only ever used shitty hifis before but now I'm buying a house I want something a bit nicer but am starting at the lower end of things.

  • cool - I would also look at heavy platter Lenco idlers - like the L75/GL75 - get them mounted onto a heavy plinth and they sound amazing, even better if you replace the tonearm at somepoint:

  • Ah, cheers. I'm a bit of a novice, but am getting advice from plenty of audiophiles about this. I do kinda just want something that will work straight away though, then potentially upgrade/tinker.

  • My amp is buzzy to the touch, needs earthing? Who will do? NR Brixton? Can't get in touch with Alf electronics.

  • my dad had a lenco l75 i remember as a kid playing with it,
    the speed changer shows 16 / 33 / 45 / 78 16 !

i'm pretty sure it sounded good

  • ^great turntables. best suit a tinkerer though.

mine too... why is this? and how do I earth it?

    :(

  • Audiophiles, I need some help please.

As I get older (and today I've had a bollocking from a doctor) I need to protect my hearing at gigs and clubs etc and my ears can't cope with My Bloody Valentine type onslaughts anymore without ringing for days.

What earplugs should I use/are good to protect my little ears but still hear the music properly? I know that generic musicians earplugs are available but some recommendations would be nice.

    Thanks!

  • On a budget, Etymotic Research ER20 are a good choice.

They also offer models which are moulded to your own ear shape which require a consultation. This is what you see professional musicians occasionally use.

    Avoid wearing cans.
