  • Headphone out (mini jack) is your only output option for that mini system. Mini jack to rca are more robust than mini jack to mini jack in my experience but there’s not much in it.

  • Neither of those are good options.

Unsure of what you are trying to achieve here: Quality? Volume? Extra room capability? Ability to drive esoteric speakers?

In general you should not put an amplified output into an amplifier.

It seems your extra amp thing is just a power amp, with no pre amp volume control. Taking the headphone out into it will probably work OK, bit will almost definitely mute the speaker output of the main mini system. It might make it a bit louder. It might be of better quality (but probably not). It probably won't give you an extra room capability.

The mini system will have some kind of (undoubtedly shit) headphone amplifier that drives that headphone socket. This signal will then be munged through your outboard power amplifier. The resultant signal is unlikely to be any "better" than the speaker output of your mini system. It might be louder. It might be capable of driving a low sensitivity speaker.

  • It's one of these LEPY 2024A Plus

Unsure of what you are trying to achieve here:

    Music for my shed.

I have the mini-system with stock speakers, but was looking at upgrading to the Gales spotter was selling and wasn't confident in the mini-system amp driving them:

    Mini-System

    Output Power / Channel
    16 Watt
    Output Impedance / Channel
    4 Ohm
    Frequency Response
    80 - 20000 Hz
    Total Harmonic Distortion (THD)
    10 %
    Channel Type
    main
    Channel Qty
    2

    Speakers:

    Power rating: 15 - 90Watt
    Impedance: 4 - 8 Ohm nominal
    Sensitivity for 2.83 V: 88dB
    Frequency response: 63 - 20k
    Driver Details:
    LF Driver: 1x5.25" paper type w / 72mm motor ass/y
    HF Driver: 10mm Mylar dome
    Crossover: 2-way 1st Order
    Shielding: No
    Cabinet:
    Dimensions (H x W x D): 266 x 177 x 167 mm
    Ports: 1 Rear
    Terminals: Bi-wire silver

  • The mini system would probably drive the gales straight out of the speaker outputs.

  • Sounds like that is my answer and I've wasted £18 on the Lepy baby amp.

    Cheers.

  • Yeah, the MD player has enough wattage to run them directly.

  • Some kind of secondary system for Spiritland by Living Voice? The logos look a bit like they say "Spiritland".

Can't imagine they'd sound very good pushed into the corners of such a wee room.

  • It’s the sensitivity of the speakers you want to pay attention to, those Gales are fairly efficient. 1 watt input gives 88db measured at 1m from the speaker, you’ll have no problems straight from the mini system.

You could run a headphone jack to 2xRCA from your phone to that mini amp, might be more convenient.

  • Yep looks similar. It's a lot of speaker for that room isn't it?

  • Could also simplify the whole thing and reduce clutter by removing the mini-system and plugging my Chromecast Audio into the Lepy amp.

But then when I do get time in there I like listening to old minidiscs, especially D'n B ones that I couldn't Spotify.

  • That feeling when you discover that not only sunspel but living voice speakers are made in the town you grew up in and you never knew.

  • But then when I do get time in there I like listening to old minidiscs, especially D'n B ones that I couldn't Spotify.

Have you got your old minidisc Walkman? You could use that?

  • Somewhere I think, but can't be faffed to find it.

Also it's up out of the way on a shelf, and the outhouse is a car crash of shit, so before I worry about reclaiming 12x9" of space I need to just tidy the fucking place!

  • Just put your minidiscs on a NAS.

  • How does one rip a minidisc?

  • One does not just rip a minidisc

  • Kraftwerk fans who use Tidal - Have a listen to Minimum Maximum, the live recording. It sounds absolutely spectacular.

  • Tons of live reverb. I had the CD set and couldn't get on with the massive reverb.

  • I’m getting a 3D stage like nothing else I’ve heard. It’s so absorbing.

  • Doesn't have to be on Tidal, do you think? Is it HiRes job it just CD quality streaming.

    #deezer4lyf

  • Oh, I don't have the live set on Deezer. Sadface.

  • Ah boo. I only say Tidal because it’s the only platform I have for hi-res. CD should be just as good, I don’t think that particular album on Tidal is super high bitrate, but @Airhead didn’t enjoy the experience as much as I did it seems.
