Haven’t brought speakers in at least a decade, probably more. If you’ve got space and family clearance for floorstanders have at it.
I’d also recommend a sub.
Still love my tannoy 605’s -

tannoy 605s are excellent.

Why tannoy specifically? Is this a cultural reference? Just curious.

On tannoy talk, my power amp went bang and took the voice coil from one of my drivers, devastated.
I called lockwood audio to see if they had recone kits but no avail. If anyone sees a tannoy dorset t185 for sale let me know.

No way Tannoy 605s count as a decent upgrade on my B&W 602S2s.
I'm going to start putting away a bit of cash with a view to spend a small chunk of change on some amazing second hand speakers toward the end of the year.
I'm thinking £2.5k RRP, and pick them up for a grand.
My B&Ws have lasted me two decades and I paid about £300 for them - probably my best ever investment! I want my next pair to be just as long lived.
No point doing this bit by halves. With electronics you can mix and match and make incremental upgrades. Speakers, not so much.

... the sort of setup only a single man can have.

Ah, they are still going, excellent! They re-coned one of my Jamo speakers at least 15 years ago. It has been perfect ever since, and used a lot.

Yeah. Shame they don’t have any parts. Well obsolete now.

I had no idea that was a thing. Strange that amazon don't push them much.

Spendor A6R worth a look.
I have the A5s and have a long standing itch to upgrade to the 6s.

Good strategy.
Personally all this talk about vintage speakers is fine but as you can see, repairs are a PITA.
You know I have the Kef R300s so I'm obvs biased but new Kefs are extremely good with a very neutral sound profile. That might be a problem coming from B&W which certainly deliver a more coloured sound. I also think that the previous (now discontinued) Kef R series is better value, i.e. quite a bit cheaper and sound-wise not so different from the new R3/R7/R11s. So I would be looking at the R300/R500/R700s all of which are 3 way, well-tuned products with decent bass. Otherwise the usual suspects, PMC etc.

Never heard any Kef speakers but the tech looks impressive, the drivers look like the very high end PMC stuff. If you like transmission line then PMC are great. Otherwise ATC but pick from the studio monitor line if you don't need shiny veneered wood boxes. I have had B&W in small systems but like freddo never thought they were great value for money.
Have a look for anything designed by Andrew Jones, the Elac products especially have a lot of good reviews and punch well above their weight.

no pining after vintage speakers here, just brought them ages ago from new, shout out to Super Fi on Tottenham Court Road and they still work, still sound good so no need to upgrade.
All I really want is a sub, but not worth it in my flat.
was looking at the REL Habitat 1, but they've discontinued it. Sadface.jpg -

I just brought some PMC Twenty5.23 to replace my B&W 801d's and I am not disappointed. The clarity and imaging is stunning though they do lack the bottom end oomph of the B&W's. However, they are still punchy and make for a great listen.

Nice. I may well do. Thanks.
Big Tannoys. Don’t fuck around with toy speakers.
