Good point.
Maybe use the £100 spare to put loads of LEDs in it?

Thinking of jumping on the digital bandwagon, and buying a nas which would have all my music and films on and then plug that into something like the marantz or denon do something similar, just wondering whether its worth the 300 odd notes for it...
They appeal because I'm getting more and more into the dab, Internet radio, podcast world as well as wanting to stream mixcloud which currently just live on my computer or phone, so this or similar seems like the perfect all in oner..

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too - it'll just be easier to manage everything when it's all together.
I don't know a great deal about them or what's best but my amp & CD player are Marantz so I'd like it to match.

but apart from that, what have the romans ever done for us..?

I'd buy a lenco idler platter and build a plinth for it, or if I was feeling flush and lazy, buy this for £2k and put a decent arm on it. http://www.ptpaudio.com/solid9.html

Flush and lazy is the perfect combination.

something from VPI or clearaudio.
Or if you're feeling fruity, michell gyrodec.

^ All of those are perfectly reasonable.

Thanks for all the recommendations.
Reason for upgrade is greed, first and foremost. From an audio perspective I'm keen to not hear the motor and simply have something special.
@timmah! how amazing is the shelving? Spenny but totally worth it.

This is on my "small lottery win" shopping list:

What shelving is that?

Mark sparky's vitsoe 606. That's just a picture I found googling it. It looks fantastic.

Edit: Just noticed timmah had already answered. Vitsoe, nice but pricey.

So @johnnyhotdog have you heard any 1st hand recommendations for network streamers?
Having a quick google, in the £250-£500 price range you've got the denon dnp-730a, marantz 6005 or the pioneer n50a.
For what it's worth what hi-fi seem to prefer the pioneer but they also seem to want to steer you towards the bigger brother of all of these which start taking you towards the £1000 and up range which I'm never going to be hitting unless I fall into an inheritance somehow..
The only issue for me with the ones mentioned is the lack of dab but supposing that the Internet radio option makes up for that...Anyone else have any experience of network streamers that aren't the chrome cast audio???

Can you make your own with a raspberry pi? Or some other small Linux box using volumio that can be "driven" by your smart phone?
-
• #3071
You can borrow my pi/dac if you want CB.
-
• #3072
That would be too much hassle from my end, but I'm sure you could. Think Nad are funding the bluesound node 2 which is the same just slightly more polished with a decent app to control it..

No first hand recommendations but it seems like the 6005 is the one I'd go for. It's come down in price a lot ad seems to have all the features I'd want.
At the moment I'm using a NAD DAC II streamer which is great. It does everything I want (i.e. play music from my laptop to my stereo) and it doesn't sound like the music's playing underwater.

Need to do a bit more research, (read what hifi, go into store and discuss with staff), but think I'm leaning towards the pioneer n50, supposedly it sounds better, has a nice lcd screen and is not much more than the 6005..
Good call....but needs more space age carbon nano tubes ;)
