  • I probably won't know till I get home next, which could be a month or two. But they would have been expensive enough. He wants rid of all his old classical LPs as well, so win-win

Well, they probably weren't that expensive, but probably worth being free

  • What sort of Tannoys? Some are excellent.

Thats true, those ones they used at Pontin's and Butlins you could hear from miles away when they announced the knobbly knees competition.... :)

  • Cheers for the info, grabbed some mid range cables in the end.
How's pizza going? My bloody grill is still bust, which reminds me...

  • Still going strong. Have started baking on a steel plate, which holds heat better and > stone. still no brick oven though :(

  • Ha, I started doing that too last year.
Old electric oven though, but cranked to max it does fairly well.

  • Use a frying pan. Trust me, so much better... (frying pan and grill). I dont even bother with domestic ovens now.
I'm building a pizza oven in the woods I rent to ride my BMX... its going to be EPIC.

Back to audio, fancy speaker cables, worth it? My new Amp should arrive tomo! Bet its shit!

  • fancy speaker cables, worth it?

Definitely not. There's no audible difference between mains cable, cat5 ethernet or posh directional speaker cables. The audio cable industry is pure snake oil.

My headphone cables are made of steel ffs, so plain old copper is just the ticket.

  • Cheers BRO. I read a fair few folks saying it was but I had my doubts...
Also, I am very free next week, we need to make plans...

  • What about terminating the cables? Any appreciable difference between banana plugs with screws or ones you have to solder? Assuming a non-wobbly, solid connection on both?

  • A secure connection is really the important part but something would have to be seriously broken or mis-handled to not work. Amp/speaker binding posts are fine so screw-on banana plugs should be fine too.

  • Question for people more knowledgeable than me please:

Is it possible to add a valve pre-amp in between turntable and amp (that already has a phono stage) and is it worth doing if so?

I have the option of a Pro-ject Tube Box for cheapz but don't want to end up with over-amplified feedback.

    Thanks!

  • Depends if the preamp is applying an RIAA EQ curve or not. If it is you'd have to run it into another input on the amp.

  • This is where I don't really understand what's going on but yes, it does.

So, I'd need to plug it in through one of the Analogue RCA Inputs?

  • I'm looking for a new bedroom radio. Criteria are under £200, all-in-one unit, Dab, bluetooth, remote control. Any suggestions?

Looking at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Revo-Reception-Bluetooth-Wireless-Streaming/dp/B00GUF0EFU/ and http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OQ9Q2R6/ so far

  • Correct. Usually there is an aux or similar input you can use.

A phono preamp does two things. It amplifies the signal to "line level" ie the input level that the amp can deal with. In addition it applies a filter called the RIAA filter, which allows bass to be cut in the grooves of the record without massive amplitude and the needle jumping out of the groove.

If you plugged it into the phono input on your amp it would be doing both of these things twice...

  • Sonos play:1. No Bluetooth but you won't need it.

  • I want something that I can just press the power button and the radio comes on, no faffing with my phone or whatever. Plus wi-fi is patchy in my bedroom.

  • I strongly recommend a Revo Superconnect, excellent connectivity, great sound, it's a bit over your budget but definitely worth it...

  • Got it.

    Thanks for the help chaps!

  • In addition to the pre-amp chat above, some pre's also contain an output buffer stage that is very low output impedance, they're used sometimes to 'drive' longer lengths of cable say for example if your (typcially mono-block) poweramps were set up next to your speakers but your TT/Streamer/CD player etc are on the other side of the room in your stately home sized living room.

  • I ruled out the superconnect due to the patchy wi-fi, that's why I'm looking at the model down, the Super signal. Do you have the superconnect, how do you find it?

  • FUCK ME SIDEWAYS.
So this is what people mean when they talk about room filling crystal clear beautiful sound.
A&R A60 delivered. Its so small and light! Tested Airport and turntable, both sound incredible.

    MASSIVE thanks to all for:
    A. Putting up with me being a total bore
    B. Pointing me in the right direction

Just need to hide all cables and make a stand for the Beogram as it's too big to fit on top.

  • Had to wait for morning light.... oh boy I am happy with this....
Ignore the stray cable, that'll be tidied away, just waiting on one more adapter...
