  • Wow... I see smsl has also upped their game! Some expensive amps.

I'm happy with their el cheapo ones

  • @Butchers_dog and @Mr_Smyth

Just finished listening to Black Beings whilst trying to fix a computer. Youngest asked me whether the noise was a computer malfunction.

  • Thanks @TRA @ChainBreaker @hugo7, all very useful insight! I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks!

  • Yeah, @freddo gave a set of Presonus 4.5 (I think?) outstanding feedback a few years ago. People seem to really like 'em.

  • My Sony cd player started skipping yesterday - it's a Sony cdp xb930 I bought from @Dazaa ages ago, so it's seen some action.
Should I just spray some compressed air into it to remove some dust, or is it likely to need a specialist repair?
Brand new CDs, straight out of the box, seemed to be skipping on random parts ( I couldn't replicate it on a specific part of the disc).

  • Cheers for the various suggestions. I've got one of these little Bose speakers plugged in at the moment which gave me the idea for a soundbar.

I'm not too keen on a sub, more wires and nowhere particularly good to put it out of the way. I also had those Edifier speakers bookmarked which were my original plan until I measured up. The underside of the desk has a lot of stuff already attached so I don't think a soundbar underneath would work.

  • Great rabbit hole/channel for nerding out on hi-fi:

  • I am very happy with my Bose Revolve+.

  • The laser can sometimes become unaligned through aging of the carrier plastics. Have you looked online tto see if there are any possible remedies?

  • It's also worth checking the power supply caps. If you open the case you might see bulging/split caps or sometimes you can smell it.

  • Thanks.
A quiet weekend of exploring and googling looks likely...

  • Need to sort out all of my cables and shit, but this is my new listening space. Curtains unfortunately are not central due to the air conditioning unit - which is annoying me. And the DAC is where it is because my power cable isn't long enough... Think I have longer versions of these speaker cables somewhere, which should eliminate the floating cables, but considering one speaker is in a corner, I'm super happy with how it all sounds as mentioned up thread. Not having a TV has made it much easier to place everything.

  • Nice light sabre!

  • I’ve barely even looked at hifi stuff for a decade, but I was prompted by my wife to sort out the turntable with a new cartridge so that she can listen to her records.

Of course, I immediately fell down a rabbit hole that’s seen me replace my old NAD C350 amp with an Audiolab 6000a, and I’m looking at speakers to replace my B&W 601 S3s (any recommendations for a nice pair of stand-mounters very welcome).

Where I’m in danger of wasting money is on upgrading my old turntable. It’s a 20-year-old Pro-Ject Debut, which was a decent turntable for not a lot of money back then, but it’s pretty basic these days. I’ve put an acrylic platter on it, and I’ve got a carbon fibre tonearm in the post. I’m going to remove the onboard phono stage in favour of using the one in the amp, and am considering an aluminium sub-platter, and various other tweaks. In all, should cost me around £350. Am I wasting money? Should I just buy a Rega P3, or could this be better by the time I’m done?

  • I still can't get behind Bitches Brew. It's just too much.

Have you listened to In a Silent Way? It's a bit more relaxed/ambient than Bitches Brew.
Luckily my wife went down the jazz hole at the same time I did, and I can put on something like Bitches Brew or On the Corner without complaints.

  • I think you will get benefit from the upgrades although to me, spending £350 on a TT of that level is perhaps a bit marginal.

OTOH, if you've already made the purchases, get it rigged up and see how it sounds :-)

BTW what cartridge will you be using? That could make a significant difference.

  • Thanks - I think I agree it’ll be marginal. However I paid for the turntable 20 years ago, so as long as I end up with something that’s better than what £350 would buy me new today, I think I’m ok with it .

It’ll be a Goldring E3 that’s going on it. The Linn Adikt that’s on there was going to cost £220 for a new stylus, which I can’t justify on a disposable part (and I didn’t spend over £400 on that cartridge, it was given to me by a friend).

  • Yeah, I get down with In a Silent Way, but BB is just not my thing.

  • Anyone know anything about Visonik David speakers? Mine are called David 7.4. labelled 20-100w, they’re small two-way things about 9”x 5”, and pretty deep. They have wall brackets, came out of a cinema projection booth, so possibly an AV professional type affair. Think they had grilles, that just squidged in the flange lip around the front as there’s no attachments for covers. Black steel round-cornered cabs. Seem lovely, can’t figure out if they’re worth something or not, unfindable on the net for me - found a few other similar David models, a chat on an audio forum about one model. Using as my editing monitors plonked on my desk via a musicians’ dac interface thing and the lab ‘in’ of a NAD3020, seems a pretty nice sound to my undiscerning ear. The drivers have large rubbery mounts and really jump about, which in the old days used to impress me.

Any info on ‘hot or not’ gratefully recieved.
Also anyone got a tip for a simple desk mount? Was thinking two squash balls cut in half per speaker!

  • Is the nobsound still the Forum Approved bluetooth amp? Want to connect something to some speakers for the office

  • I can personally vouch for the Loxjie A30 but it might be in a different price category to some of the nobsound options.

  • Also take a look at smsl amps
