Yeah I wouldn't rule out a foamie, Almond Surfboards make some awesome looking progressive foamies but I don't think anyone in Europe is stocking them so taxes and shipping would hurt...
A foamie fish would be fun!

I want to give surfing a go. Skateboarded for 20 years. Any forumers up for some surf trips with a total beginner?

@sacredhart - Go for it, I'm sure you'll love it.
I'm in Newquay right now (third trip this summer) but I'm not sure when I'll be back after this one. I'd recommend Cornwall as it's been significantly easier than my first few trips to Bournemouth to catch some decent waves. Pretty sure Dorset has some good spots too though. To get started all you really need is board hire and a lesson with a local school so don't let not having people to go with stop you. Saying that I could be up for a forum trip if there's enough interest.
Funnily enough as the weather has been up and down in Newquay i've been trying my mates skateboard and have convinced myself to get one for London based "training".

Hey, does anyone know any good facebook groups/forums for finding crewing work on ships? Trying to get myself across the Atlantic in the next 18 months without flying.. Thanks

Surfy chaps... I'm in need of some advice on a board.
I've probably surfed a dozen times down through the years and I'm certainly not a good surfer but I know the mechanics and just need to get out more often.
I'm thinking of buying a board. Logistically a lot of my surfing opportunities will be Irish East Coast with occasional forays to the West Coast so we're talking small to medium waves and quite often sloppy mushy disappointment with an odd beaut day on the Atlantic...
Would I be mad to buy a high volume foam fish such as the Ocean and Earth Mark Richards Ezi Rider 6ft (47l) or should I just buy a 7ft6+ mini mal like a sensible person?
I'm 180cm and c.85kg.

A foamie (even the more refined, "performance", expensive ones) will be more restrictive and frustrating for your progression. Get a second hand plastic or PU board in 7-8' range. Learn to repair it, and surf it to death. You'll be thankful for the extra length and paddle power, repairability and better placed volume...
Also, look for something with three fins and a fairly tucked in nose and tail. Twin and single fins are fun if you know what you're doing but are more temporamental and less user friendly, and a narrower nose and tail mean less volume for the same stringer length = good paddle power, lower swing weights and more manageable in the waves. It might seem boring but when you've got the basics down you will begin to better identify what you want from surfing and what board(s) you might like to progress onto. The easier a board is to paddle and control, the more you can concentrate on all the important stuff like reading waves and understanding placement, timing, routine etc.

Some excellent looking recommendations there fella! I'll trawl the eBay and pick up something! I'm actually happy to do my own repairs after the experience of epoxy coating the fingerboard on my bass guitar!
Thanks for the help!

Really enjoying the VG, itβs got more interesting over the last few days as Dalinβs lead has come right down.
Also, the Ultime trimarans attempting the Jules Verne are just amazing, sadly they have both aborted now but such incredible boats. Sodebo had caught half the VendΓ©e fleet and was in the middle of the Indian Ocean in 16 days.
And the Americaβs cup racing starts next week!

I went with an Olaian 900 series foam board from Decathlon when it was on sale! It's kind of perfect for a beginner but obviously not the sexiest bit of kit, I'd rather have supported a local shop but provided lockdown plays ball I'll try and get lots of surfs in in the coming year and then maybe treat myself to something nice from a local builder come summer!
I also bought a Srface 4/3 wetsuit and some Needessentials boots, gloves and a hood which I've not been able to use yet due to lockdown restrictions but planning a few Christmas surf trips at the moment!

Ah nice. Everyone has there own way of progressing but literally every board shop in Newquay steered me away from buying a more expensive mini mal and pushed me toward a cheaper foamie. The shop i got my board in said they'd happily buy it back when i wanted to move up but they also noted most people hold onto them because they're really good for crap surf days. FWIW i got 2 weeks solid surf in Newquay over the summer and never once thought i wish i had a smaller better board!
Good luck going out this Christmas, i did new years day this year and with all the gear on you'll be fine. That said lookout for lifeguard protection over the Christmas break if like me you're not a strong swimmer. I got caught in a rip tide and definitely would of appreciated some help!

On the subject of boards I recently found this store specialising in vintage/ex-pro boards (no cheap foamies unfortunately).
Fun to see the trends in both design and graphics: https://www.surfboardhoard.com -

Last night in the AC was so good. Tight tactical racing in race 1, then a spectacular end to race 2!
Nah, meat eater. Huge seafood fan. Also really enjoy the risotto like dishes from the area around Comporta using local rice. Plenty of veggie options. Can't remember what vegan options are like.
