  • Finally downloading crazy taxi, I've been waiting for this to come out. I am excited.

  • Just played it. Just as awesome as I remember.

Whilst we are on a retro games kick, Carmageddon is FREE today on iOS:
    https://itunes.apple.com/app/carmageddon/id498240451?mt=8

  • Yep, Crazy Taxi is still wicked, I loved The Offspring when I was a teenager. Downloading Carmageddon now, cheers for the tip!

  • I started dishonored as a sneaky sneak but soon turned into a stab-happy maniac.

Hoping there is a NG+ where I can put upgrades to goo use and get a kill free game going.

I did the same as you stabby shooty happy. The rat horde is fun too.

I will replay this as a proper sneak though (Despite no NG+) on hard and use a completely different load-out and make very decisions.

It has more emergent play than Deus Ex and the world is less clichéd. It now reminds me of the excellent thief games in atmosphere. Best game I've played since Dark Souls

  • Shall investigate when I get back to the UK. That said - am in asia at the mo and games on steam are crazy cheap... 28 singapore dollars for a 35 gbp game.. (exchange rate mean that's about 14 pounds..)

  • This was x50 better than Half Life 2, not to diminish Half Life 2, but Half Life 1 updated is so brilliant.

The disaster concept is so much better than the fighting the combine in the future sillyness. I didn't even take on board any of the plot of Half Life 2, it didn't make any sense. Half Life one is brilliant, simple and atmospheric. The most perfect game I've ever played. And I've played about 7.

    Just been playing it.

The very best part of it is actual subtitles which the original HL didn't have, I have no idea if the in-game dialogue is the same as the original, but for the first time ever in decades I finally can follow the story (it's pretty much self-explanatory to play HL without knowing the story).

I was very surprised at how well made this community project is, the attention to detail is obviously not as high as HL2, but high enough to appreciated the amount of work each individuals have put into it.

  • Completed MOH: Warfighter last night - had pre-loaded so it was unlocked at 11pm local time, had completed by 4:30am on hard (including say...a few deaths/replaying sections - and one glitch where I had missed an enemy and couldn't understand why I couldn't progress was stood staring at a wall for 15 mins).

Not bad. Very linear but in a pretty filmic way so I didn't feel bored. I think it tries to be a little too earnest at times with subplot but it's kind of refreshing for a game of its ilk. A couple of nice plot turns and the cut scenes were beautifully rendered - there were a few moments when I thought I was watching a video clip (Apart from eyes, which no game in the history of games has EVER managed to get right).

One thing I will say I was impressed with:

Traditionally for first person shooters (that aren't from the Battlefield stable) it's rare to have vehicles. I remember playing Enter the Matrix years ago and, while largely enjoying the universe it created, thinking that the clunky vehicle sections were a complete letdown. Not because of poor control, although that was an issue, but because of the hideously realised landscape and physics. The cars were solid blocks, and the roads like a bobsleigh track. If you hit an object, that was it, mission over.

Here, although the controls for the occasional driving missions were still a bit clunky and although there was, largely, a fairly specific path you could follow, the actual environment within the path was fantastically realised. If you hit a car, you didn't stop suddenly and have to reverse/start the mission again. You just hit the throttle and barged your way through. I remember thinking in several instances that it had been well created for a change.

Again, a tiny detail in the game but I was happy with it.

    Driving boats was still shit.

Haven't played multiplayer yet though it looks fun.

    Singleplayer: 6.5 - 7 / 10

  • 5.5 hours on hard?

    :/

'Cinematic' shooters are really starting to get old now if you ask me. I used to love the way it all got more and more ridiculous and felt like you were in an action film, but now, I dunno.

Shoot some baddies on the way to a set piece, do said set piece, watch a cut scene and get to the next one.

Next game I'm actually looking forward to is the new hitman. Halo can GTFO >>>>>

Only 'space n shit' game I've ever really enjoyed was mass effect.

  • I'd say that was about average these days in terms of the amount of single player content. Long gone are the the week long marathons - probably for the best. Cuts down on cases of thrombosis I suspect.

New Hitman? is that not Absolution? Wasn't that slammed for being a bit naff? Seem to remember negative headines a month or two ago (but didn't investigate so I may have misread).

Only ever played the first Halo - didn't appeal.

Interesting that you should say cinematic shooters = a tired format. I'd say the opposite was true - though not necessarily limit it to shooters. My understanding was that consumers wanted to be more involved in games and take on the role of a character more now than ever - i.e. more interactivity, more filmic etc.

With games overtaking movies and music as the most valuable entertainment industry (a $50 billion dollar market that will be worth $90 billion by 2015) I think that'll only increase.

  • I dunno... it's just a bit boring. As I say, was really exciting the first few times, but there just doesn't seem to be anything new to any of them.

Played the first few missions on MHW, and it could have been any game. Watch a bit video, shoot a few baddies, something explodes and nearly hits you, here comes another set piece, kill some more baddies, watch another video. (But yeah, the driving was well implemented - for once)

I actually really enjoyed the last MH, and airbourne even more (mainly because it had something a bit different - even if it did get a bit old quickly).

I'm not saying every game should be a 'thinker' but I dunno. If I want to switch off, I'll drive around on GTA and play silly beggars.

Hitman appeals to me because of the sneaky sneaky. That and having to think about how you're going to get in / out of a level, not just right, I'm at A, got to get to B... shoot everything and hope for the best.

  • Fair enough - I get that. Which is why I'm keen to try out Dishonoured when I get back to the land with good connection speeds.

  • See also.. Watch Dogs.

  • OOH! And The Last of Us..

  • Yep and yep.

    Forgot about both of them!

  • Watch dogs looks awesome.

New hitman should be fun. Still remember playing Hitman 2 silent assassin back in the day. That game would still hold it's own for me now - so much you could do - run and gun or hide the knife in the flowers and do it all properly.

Also the next Grand Theft Auto will be great I've never played a grand theft auto I haven't enjoyed. If they combine elements of Red Dead mainly the group stuff on line it'll be fab.

  • I'm looking forward to panicking in a police chase because of a near empty tank, and shooting petrol trails to blow up cars... (is that even realistic?)

  • Hitman HD on its way, Hitman 2, contracts and blood money.
Quite looking forward to replaying them as they should be, I remember playing them as a shooter, going in and massacring everyone.

  • Hitman games are soo good.

Deus Ex HR is shit compared to them. Have not yet tried Dishonoured, but expect it to be good -- and give you Hitman-like freedom to do your thing.

  • Dishonored is good, hard to be completely stealthy (well, for me)
Worth picking up, should be half price soon enough.

  • I want to play some thief games again... :(

  • Hitman HD on its way, Hitman 2, contracts and blood money.
Quite looking forward to replaying them as they should be, I remember playing them as a shooter, going in and massacring everyone.

Really? That could be fantastic :)

  • Just realised they re-released the original 3 Ratchet & Clank games in an HD trilogy. Will pick that up this week - the franchise has gone downhill otherwise.
Looking forward to AC3 next week too.

  • @spenceey trophy list was leaked last week, zavvi are stating a December release, I think they should have released it prior to Absolution, but that's just me.

Hope it does come out soon.

  • I'm on my second time through Dishonoured, this time indiscriminately murdering absolutely everyone in sight just for the hell of it. It's still more fun to do this with a stealth approach, picking them off one by one and hiding the bodies. Despite playing both times on hard, the powers make it a little too easy, particularly being able to 'blink' up to enemies from quite a distance away and take them down. If you're quick enough this even works without needing to be behind them.

One cool trick is to stop time, then equip the crossbow and shoot at multiple targets. The bolts hang in mid air until time starts again, at which point they take down the enemies simultaneously.

Am about half way through and so far haven't noticed any difference in the way it's playing out, apart from a slight increase in the number of rats.
