  • Erm... you do realise I was deliberately hit by a car in a hit and run?

Not to disagree with your core argument, but there is no single silver bullet. Cycle training doesn't protect against a driver who will use their vehicle as a weapon. A helmet doesn't either. Nor does more visibility.

My personal position has changed. I'm not in control of my own safety, I thought I was. Now I realise I need to expect the incident and prepare for it, but there is no silver bullet.

  • Do you think you are the only person to be targeted by a wanker in a car? There in't a single solution, but eschewing training that might prepare for the wanker in the car isn't going improve your chances. MIPS certainly isn't.

  • Hmm.

Either I'm just reading your comments as if you're angry, or you're angry.

  • I suppose considering these circumstances you are shaken up @velocio and considering options. You may approach training with an open mind, a willingness to discuss riding in traffic in a way you haven't done before.

When you're up to it lets meet and see what happens

  • Nope. I maybe the least angry person you'll ever meet.
I am just aware that over many years you've not embraced training for riding.
I am just a huge fan of on the bike training and I have delivered it to so many people that I know it makes a difference. It doesn't solve everything but avoiding it and opting for a full spec lid is the exact scenario I want to avert.

  • Give it a rest eh ?

  • As someone who's never had or considered cycle training, what is it likely that I'm currently doing wrong that could be fixed with training?

  • It's not a matter of wrong or right. Just tweaking things such as road position based on risk assessment and observation of what you do. Would need to see you ride....

If you apply this to other Ares people have no issue understanding the value of professional input.

"As someone who's never had or considered swimming coaching, what is it likely that I'm currently doing wrong that could be fixed with training?"

  • I doubt that swimming coaching is the same thing ... unless you want to become a pro or at least compete.

  • I'm sure a swimming coach would help even if I just wished to improve technique, efficiency, endurance safety in water.

  • I went for the Giro Synth MIPS, the POC made me look like a child with a bread bin on its head

Same here. Well actually I looked like the mushroom from Super Mario.

I went for a Synth but not MIPS because it's marketing bollocks.

Looks aside personally I found the fit of the Synth better, although that could be the shape of my head. If you do insist on MIPS the Synth MIPS is a lot cheaper than the Octal MIPS too...

  • what is it likely that I'm currently doing wrong

To better answer your question. My own experience of how I, a life long rider, changed my riding when I trained (to be an instructor ).

I had read Cyclecraft and already knew in theory primary/secondary position, assertive cycling etc. However after training and over a number of weeks following that I completely reconstrued my position on road relating this to the traffic stream rathe than the kerb. Completely changed riding experience from often being squeezed to having loads if space and almost no near misses/ imcidents

  • The POC Octal Avip helmet fitted great :)

  • looks like you're healing up well...

  • Anyone want POC octal cannondale green 2015 in M

  • I need to replace a 5 year old cannondale helmet. Tried on a Giro Synthe today and seemed decent for £112.

Any other helmets I should look at before buying the synthe? Just for commuting, weekend rides and possibly on the velodrome next year.

  • Synthe is a decent all round, if that is too much you feel for a helmet you can always downgrade to the giro foray, which is very similar but with more vents and at a fraction of the price.

  • Cheers will have a look at the foray.

Also what should I actually be looking for in a helmet fit when trying them on?

I tried a large and was loose until I had all the straps done up. Could still wiggle it slightly.

I tried the medium and it was tight and close fitting without any straps done up. Don't think I could wear a cap underneath.

  • Tbh, I have two rules when trying on helmets, if it comfortably and how pro I look with one on!!

  • Another good value alternative is the Giro Atmos. Is far less mushroomy on my bulbous head than aforementioned Synthe, Foray or POC.

  • @laner betrayed me and I still have this: https://www.lfgss.com/comments/13354951/

Pls pm me collect from NW1.

  • How many £?

  • Happy to relieve you of it.

  • I'll big up the POC Octal.

Received mine and worn it a few days... makes me redefine what I think is important in a helmet.

I hated wearing one, and knew a lot was to do with comfort but I didn't really understand how comfortable one of these can be. They're big and the looks are definitely a love/hate thing, but I simply do not feel it at all. It doesn't inhibit airflow, it doesn't crush the ears, it doesn't seem to weigh anything, I just do not feel it.

Also, the colours. I figured the orange is pretty ugly, but only orange and white were available and it's not a small helmet so I figured the white would look even larger so I'll go with the orange. What makes a big difference about such a visible helmet is how much quicker drivers appear to both detect and acknowledge eye contact. I am not making eye contact any more than I used to, but having a visible helmet is getting it acknowledged more often and sooner.

It was an expensive helmet, but definitely a good buy.

And I notice that @_Zed_ has a medium one available up there ^^^^^^^^^ for only £100.

If you're in the market, you can't do wrong with a POC Octal if it proves comfy for you (and so far in this thread a fair number have said that it's blissfully comfortable, to the degree that you don't feel it).
