Bizarrely rubbish attempted bike theft

  • I'm just wondering how to prevent my bike being stolen by someone using a serious version of this tac-tic, ie, putting their own D lock on then coming back in the middle of the night in a van with a cutting tool to cut through my lock. And I'm wondering if said serious version of this tac-tic is often used by serious theives?

  • When did you realise you weren't a crime lord?

Not long after your mum took down my Rhianna poster in a fit of jealousy.

  • I'd take a punt and say that that tactic is probably only good for the short term and with a cheapish lock - they're taking a punt on leaving a £50 lock on a bike for a number of hours with a high probablility of it having been cut off or the police informed by the time they get back. Obviously this could be wrong and it would be a total pain if it did happen.

Wasn't there a story on here of this happening and putting out a help request for a saw to chop it off?!

  • IT happened to me during the London carnival. Police informed me that if I cut the other lock off, I could be done for damaging their property :(

Thankfully a fahg lock was stronger than whatever cutting tools they brought at 3am. Lock has a slight mark where they tried to use bolt cutters on it.

The thieves tried to use bolt croppers on a Fagh? I wonder how many of them are fretting over their MENSA fees.

    Most likely referring to this:

  • ^ elementary my dear Watson.

so you just left your bike there and came back in the morning?

Yup, didn't sleep much that's for sure. Got back and they had destroyed el cheapo front lock, tried to break the fagh (d-lock not chain), gave up and left. Was surprised they didn't strip the bike of all the bits, or kick it to pieces...

I had however already talked to the security people so maybe they stopped them (it was on CCTV)

seriously bad advice from police. (i mean, is bike thief really going to roll up to the police station saying, hey, someone cut the lock i stuck on his bike so i could nick it...?)

  • If your bike gets locked in this manner I will take great pleasure in destroying the lock.

There are other ways to break it quite easily. :(

  • I'd be afraid that thieves after realizing they can't go through my fagh mini would destroy all the bits and the frame just to piss me off/ in revenge.
And what a stupid advice from police.*

  • It was advice the police have to vice unfortunatly. They are the police they can't tell you that yes you should punch a mugger in the face, because if it goes wrong it would be their fault.

You should have still waited till they left and destroyed it.

Woah! Steady Khornight2 bit too much common sense there for one post.

  • So I wondered about that... what if I lock a cheap bike to a ferrari's alloys ? I bet the police would take a different view there ;) New form of wheel clamp ? :)

  • Surely if the lock was attached to your bike and not another, then there's no excuse for them if it went to court?

If they parked their bike or a crap decoy next to yours and locked yours "by accident" then they could claim it was a mistake, but just the lock, not so much.

Would like to see a criminal damage case come against someone who chopped off a lock in those circumstances. Would hope that the claimant was instead done for attempted theft.

  • they had locked another bike to mine... stolen bike i guess..
