I donate plasma every 4 weeks, I find it has less of an impact on my riding than donating whole blood. My total donations now over 90.It is a regular check on blood pressure and iron count.
They approached me about 'platelet donation', what's the deal?
They said something like being able to donate whole blood then inbetween that and the next hole blood session they'd take my plasma....
Does it take longer? are there more checks? what are impacts on your health afterwards?

In Australia you can give whole blood only every 12 weeks, as it takes the body that long to recover and rebuild the red blood cells. Plasma can be given every 2 weeks because they take the whole blood, spin off the red cells and return those to you and they keep the plasma. Similar story for platelets which can be donated each 4 weeks I think.
I once donated whole blood then went on a hard hill climb the next day, and was totally stuffed, as I was down on the red cells needed to carry the oxygen around the body (no EPO here)
Plasma/Platelets takes about an hour, but I just take my ipod along and relax.
I have previously donated platelets until they changed the equipment and I was rendered unsuitable. I did that because a rider in our Saturday group was needing platelets destroyed in the chemo treatment. Sadly the treatment was unsuccessful.
So with plasma I am still able to do a hard ride the next day, making sure I have plenty of water the day before, and after the donation.
My bit of community service. When I was much younger, we donated at work. We had races to see who could finish first, then played a hard game of squash after work, then a few beers... then I grew up.

I'm not allowed, for a completely stupid reason. Unless they've changed the rules.
+1 it makes me angry.
-

I used to donate until they changed the rules, as there's a chance I have mad cow's desease (from having blood transfusion since 1980) i'm not allowed.

I'm not allowed. OH WELL!

I've given blood before, I like the slightly light feeling after. I've just finished some ink work so have to wait for 6 months (used to be 18)

ok so i am now eligible to donate - who is with me? will be doing it anywhere central, or in camden if no one wants to join me in having a needle stuck in them.
drinks afterwards? :)

I simply find having a drip needle plunged deep into arm so horrible and unpleasant I can never bring myself to give blood. I wish theyd offer to take some during a doctors blood test etc, when the drip is already there. Id happily give a jugful then.

i really want to give blood as i had a transfusion last year and wanted to give back, but because i had a transfusion last year i can't give blood for about 20 years..... rubbish.

Place I normally go is just off upper Regent street, nice little centre, choice of biscuits and plenty of railings to lock up to.
-

The one near Margret (sp?) Street? I go there too.
Because it's a permanent blood donation place and you don't need an appointment, I can just get it done there when I have the time. All the local donations are in those lorry things and you have to book and I can never remember when they're there, they're also usually there during the workday which is sort of unfathomable.
If it's your first donation, remember to eat lots of things with Iron in.

I'm up, but can't do it until the first weeks of January as I last donated in September. The centre on Margaret street is rather nice and fairly central for those who would have to come in from different places. So if you still haven't been by the new year then I am willing to join.

sounds like this margaret street place is best location, i'm not too bothered about getting it done straight away.
citygent - i went with my dad 3 times, i donated all three, he donated once for lack of iron. i drink guiness.

I had the iron deficiency thing for the first time at my last donation. They did a test using the better tester to see if I was anaemic or anything, turned out I was 149 when you need to be above 150 to donate.... But it's 150 and not 149 for a reason, I suppose.
