  • I'll give you some more of my opinions later.
I eagerly await these future revelations. What morsels information will we glean from your admissions? Which tidbits of trivia will pique our interest more than a man who likes cheese? I live in anticipation!

    :)

  • be enforced means we would have to use them and cars would have to stay out

  • So. You dredged up a 3 year old thread in order to have enough posts to start this thread?

    Do read this... http://www.lfgss.com/thread9350.html

It is really for your own good.

Otherwise try a thread on helmets. Always good for a nice debate that.

  • be enforced means we would have to use them and cars would have to stay out

So we would be limited to wherever they put a cycle lane?

Failing that, in the road with cycle lanes, we would be forced to use their dangerous, badly thought out road placement?

I think not. We have as much right to the road as everybody else. I disagree with the Cycle Superhighways on this very principle; It re-enforces the opinion among most drivers, that cyclists "don't belong on the road".

  • no just when its there we need to us it

  • Why would you do so when many are poorly designed and unsafe?

  • Mmmmmmeerrrrge

  • not using punctuation was seen as radical sometime around the 1940's, as a reaction to the very straight laced English in use at the time,
Damon Runyon was instrumental in this

Ive been copying him since 1957, when my first book On the Road came out.

  • I have just read this through & am still confused regarding non-cyclists using CSH's (Boris Blue Lanes - e.g CSH & or 8).

I have the odd chat with scooters/taxis, who after they have told me to piss off, usually ask me what part of the highway code they are contravening, I haven't a clue, I looked at a recent Q&A with Boris & am still unsure - does anyone have informed advise?

Motorcycles in Cycle Superhighways, Question No: 2576 / 2010, Valerie Shawcross
You did not answer my question No: 2548 / 2010. It was
Will motorcycles be allowed in the Cycle Superhighways? Your answer is ‘’The Barclays Cycle Superhighways are not designed for motorcycles.’’
This is not a reply to the question. The reply should be a yes or a no. I am concerned that motorbikes are not banned from using the blue cycle lanes where they do not over lap with bus lanes. There are also some areas on the network where motorbikes are allowed in cycle lanes. Can you please answer the question are motorbikes allowed into cycle lanes? And for the sake of clarity can you confirmed whether there are any enforcement action taken against motorbikes or other vehicles which drive in the superhighways?

Answer from the Mayor: Cycle Superhighways (CSHs) were developed using existing traffic orders and in accordance with DfT guidelines. Where CSHs are mandatory on-carriageway cycle lanes or physically segregated cycle lanes, no other traffic may use them. Where CSHs use bus lanes on borough roads, buses and taxis may use them, but motorcycles may not. Where CSHs use bus lanes on red routes, motorcyclists may use them, but cyclists are still protected from general traffic when the bus lane is in operation. Other parts of the Cycle Superhighways use advisory cycle lanes, blue surfacing or logos - other traffic may use these areas. Enforcement is undertaken through the established procedures.
In all cases the blue surfacing or logos are designed to help cyclists find their way, and will help make other road users aware they are likely to encounter high volumes of cyclists, advancing the proven ‘safety in numbers’ effect.

  • Short version:
If they are bordered with a solid white line, or are physically separated from the carriageway then they are for cyclists only.

If they are bordered by a dotted white line anything else may use them "if necessary"

If they are not bordered then they are just a bit of blue paint.

Same as regular cycle lanes, basically.

  • Thanks - will write to TFL as at present, CS8 (blue paint & solid white line) is a joke in the afternoon - more scooters & taxis than cyclists

  • finally got a go on the super highways a few weekends back and whilst on the flat and level straights where there is little traffic they are great (but then, any old bit of tarmac would be), but when you get into junctions, bus stops, taxi ranks and misc. they are worse than not having one!

The places where you really need a dedicated cycling lane is around busy bus stops/ terminuses and big busy multi directional junctions and at those points along CS7 at least, the thing strip of blue paint either runs out, or becomes meaningless.

For confident riders its not a problem, you always expect to look out for everything all the time. But for less expereienced/ confident riders I hope they don't get too complacent with the blue paint 'protecting' them, when really it does anything but that.
