  • does anyone want a couple of xcg guitar stands?
    jus taking up space here...

  • Lots of pressure being a bass player tho', I've done it a few times... Get off on the geekiness of playing bass, rhythm/melody minimalist ting but I'm not a natural...

    I'll take them, Rob...

  • Joe, one chrome and one black.
    like this:

  • favourite bassplayers?

Neither am I, so I just run around as much as possible and hope people don't notice. Just ask Dale.

  • Pastorious. And Mingus. And Flea, obviously. Stanley Clarke too.

  • another of my old favourites is trevor dunn (off of out of mr bungle). he's quoted in his own webpage as saying about flea:

"Flea, in all seriousness, really isn't that good. I mean c'mon Red Hot Chili Peppers were vaguely interesting in the late 80s, but Christ they fucking suck, they suck"

hehe. used to upset my parents with that first mr bungle album. stub a dub is the best creepy clown themed song about a dead dog i know. bit too "shock" for my tastes these days though. (hence removed you tube link as it was annoying me).

  • Individual view, if a bit bollox.

And Mark Stoermer too, of the current crop. Also have a soft spot for Martyn Cambell.

  • ah i was only messing. i'm not a rhcp fan to be honest. i can see why folks rate him though.

personally i tend to like really almost moronically simple bass lines, but the ones with something warped about them that makes them burrow their way into the subconscious. all my favourite basslines to play are super simple.

    how these three notes:

    YouTube - SuperFly

this was my soundcheck for years:

YouTube - King Curtis - Memphis Soul Stew

    another classic

YouTube - If You Want Me To Stay - Sly And The Family Stone

thi is a bit diferent but i'm a slightly obsessed with carlos dengler from interpol at the moment. this is a perfect example of the blend of moronic simplicity, loose sloppy groove and something just fucking weird that gets itself lodged in my brain for months. how out of tune is that first note? it's such a cool effect. it must be deliberate because it's different every time and when he finally lands it, it's bang on in tune, he's just deliberately pulling notes 1 and 3 out of tune. i reckon he's detuned, and fretting below the note he wants and bending it up something vaguely in the vicinity of the note he's after. such great swager and attitude about it too. love it.

    YouTube - Interpol - Untitled [ Music & Lyrics ]

  • Moronically simply bass lines - yes indeedie, which makes me wonder why I forgot Stuart Zender!

  • mr sausage fingers? wouldn't call him moronic. great bassplayer though.

always liked the bloke from wilco. john stirrat i think he's called. bass line on this is great. also has some wonderfully idiosyncratic "ghost is born" era tweedy guitar playing on it too. i know nels cline is technically something else... but i really like jeff tweedy's mad skronk on this album.

YouTube - Wilco - Handshake drugs (Soundstage)

  • Chris Squire as an all time favourite

YouTube - Yes - Long Distance Runaround

John and James from Palehorse get an honourable mention for the relentless riffing

YouTube - palehorse - we cannot love you

  • is that balki in that video?

i'm going to claim the captain obvious crown for nominating sir saggy-face double thumbs up himself:

YouTube - The Beatles - Dear Prudence (2009 Stereo Remaster)

and this (just cos they never looked cooler)

YouTube - The Beatles - Hey Bulldog in the studio

    awesome bassline though.

  • mr sausage fingers? wouldn't call him moronic. great bassplayer though.

Not him, the lines - less is more simplicity and texture.

Edit: though to be fair, he does appear to be hamming it up a bit in that clip.

  • John Taylor for me. The fact he could play Rio whilst fucked up beyond belief on a mixture of heroin and cocaine is pretty damn impressive. And he's such a musical player.
I also like Nigel Harrison from Blondie. Always played exactly what was needed and nothing more.
    Bernard Edwards of course.
Chris Wolstenholme from Muse is an ace player too, as tight as a drum. That Glastonbury performance which had him crowd surfing whilst playing without a single fault was one of the most impressive things I've seen.

  • fsking love these guys. 2 basses, a drum loop and voice. no guitar. beautiful.

    YouTube - Pinback - Loro

  • gay video though. here's a better look at what he's up to.

YouTube - Pinback - Loro (live)

  • It you want to see bass playing, you need to see this.

  • It you want to see bass playing, you need to see this.

i sea what you did there.

  • 2 note outro bass "riff". awesome.

    YouTube - 100% - Sonic Youth

  • YouTube - World's Prettiest Bassline (James Jamerson, 1970)

    love this comment:

That tops "Bernadette" in the genius that was James.
Completely locked in, yet completely free...dancing over the changes.
    What a motherfucker he was

    ha! RIP james.

  • the man.

    ...who spawned a million goatees.

    Make mine a double.
