I've been doing more Orville research, apparently they're all MIJ... @rickster, what say you?
I really fancy the Standard if I can get it to sound right... The alternative is to buy a Gibson, which I'm actually very tempted to do if I can find one for less than AUD$2k... They've got a lovely sounding, and very light, Zakk Wylde Les Paul for $1900 but who the actual fuck buys those things?

Dat pitchfork is fookin amazing!
-
• #3529
Lol zakk Wylde lol

• #3530
Get Bobby hoops to re spray it with. Cocks optional.

Never!
Just found a LP Heritage sunburst for just over $2k, this will become an obsession now... I know it...
In other news, I've been booted off Facebook for getting into a little flame war with a dodgy guitar dealer in Melbourne... He resprays Chinese Fenders then calls them MIJ and tries to flog them on the Brisbane buy and sell music gear page... Can't get back onto FB til I can prove my name really is Ducktones Sticker... Good thing I'm a genius with PotatoChopz, innit?

@TS... I kinda always assumed all Orvilles were MIJ, but there are doubtless shenanigans. Just searched and can't find anything that proves MIC origin, mind. I know some rate Orvilles hugely but the main faux-LP freak I know would say the wise money goes towards correct Grecos. Sooo complex.
In other news: just ordered a TC clip-on tuner for 20 sheets new (Apone, you are to blame). Still obsessing on Dano Longhorns. Current 58 Korean RI's are due for the chop; Thomann sell an ltd edition gold sparkle which is fecking outrageous. I think black might be safer. May summon my long-expired JHS connections to try to get a trade deal. Add flats, plonk. Job done.

^ Sounds good... I did see a really nice Greco (broken 'o') a couple of weeks ago that was very tempting... I may just go full rogue and get the real thing tho', life's too short to play shit guitars...
-
• #3534
Amen to that.
-
• #3535
PS Les Pauls with only three knobs on?!? Do fuck off, Gibson...
My budget just went up, can you still hook me up, Al? ;)
-
• #3536
Oh yeah possibly. My connect is coming to stay in December. Not sure the discount would cancel out the shipping. I'll ask tho.
-
• #3537
Ask him before I blow my load on something over here!?!
I'm off to see You Am I in the city tomorrow night, hotel booked for post-afterparty shenanigans, gonna go Gibson window shopping before the gig... What could possibly go wrong?
-
• #3538
Just spoke to him, he hasn't been in touch for ages and still has three guitars he doesn't want to give back so has declined to wake sleeping dogs. Haha. Chancer.
-
• #3539
He can sell me one... ;)

Tim at Tym's is trying to entice me with a period correct (c. 1970-73) James Williamson cherry sunburst Custom... So tempting... If he comes down to $3000 I may go for it...

I love my tokai love rock. In every way superior to the poS Gibbo I bought in 2005.
May need to sell tho :(
-
• #3542
I still NEED a p90 gold top / explorer
-
• #3543
Which Gibson did you buy? I had an '81 Standard for a few years back in the early 90s, it was a bastard to play for some reason* but sounded killer...
* string tension was super tight, you needed steel digits to bend notes on that thing... Turned me into a really good player for about five minutes, lost it all now, obvs... 😋

Does anyone want to relive the good old metal days and take a Jackson Kelly model off my hands? I have too many guitars and it'll never get played.
Edit: I play upright bass mostly these days, otherwise there'd be no such thing as too many guitars.

Just tried a 2014 Les Paul 'T', black with gold hardware... Stunning... $2.4k, great price...
Tim's letting me have the early 70s Custom for $3k if I want it... The 2014 plays way better tho'... Gonna go back to Tym's and try the Custom again...
I love guitar shopping... 😀
-
• #3546
OK... Fellow guitar nerds, hlp plz...
Really stuck on what to do; Nuskool 'T' plays and sounds great but lacks mojo... Early 70s Custom is tougher to play but has mojo in spades... I'll probably get used to it in time but I'm getting niggles...
Stupid thing is that $3k (<£1500) is a seriously good price for a guitar of that vintage IMHO... Especially a good one, it just doesn't have a super fast modern Gibson neck...
That said, I fell out of love with my '58 Junior years ago and when I played it again recently it felt great...

Hey bud. Do you still want this? If not, any other takers?
If not it hits the 'bay? £45 Christmas special!!!
-
• #3548
Easy bro - I think it's a great guitar and I would love to buy it but I think the missus would kill me. £45 is an absurd bargain for a guitar which sounds that good tho. If any of the rassclarts in this thread are after an acoustic I fully recommend it. I made my whole first solo album on one and they sound amazing.
-
• #3549
Nae bother. It's well ratty but I find myself picking it up as often as my posh acoustic...
Okay noodlers. Any interest? -
• #3550
Tonslen pls. Gibson T: easy 60s neck, but granadillo fingerboard and coil taps (pfff). No chambers: heavy. Fit and finish: majorly variable.
'70s Custom: ace vibe and a huge (even flippable) bargain to boot.
£5, pay at the gate, cheers.
your sprog is gonna be needing a guitar or eight soon.
