  • Definitely buy it that sucker is a tape echo!

  • It's lovely isn't it? Shop guy had no idea what it was or what it's worth. Sadly i have absolutely no need for it.

  • Build a sound system in your back garden, of course you need it.

  • Will need to do a deep dive on that, not quite sure what it does. Obvs much cheaper than the Ox?

  • Hmm, actually maybe they do different jobs. The Ox stomp is a mic/cab emulation pedal. Still sounds really good to me though

  • Managed to find a nice Tokai 2004 love rock on the bay with BKP’s and gold top finish. It’s 3.4kg too.

    Already have a 2003 violin burst and that’s a beaut, 3.8kg.

  • MIJ? And pics or GTFO. Obvs.

  • MIJ but its going back : (

    Seller mis-represented weight in advert...

    Its a fucking anchor

  • That's a shame, I'm used to heavy guitars after my Tele Deluxe and various Les Pauls so that wouldn't be a problem for me. Tho' I don't do six hour band rehearsals anymore, probably one of the things that contributed to my back pain!

  • Welp, I found an Artist 10AE (the 6L6 version of the original limited editions) for a couple of hundred and change on Reverb. Sounds exactly how I'd hoped it would. I might have to sell the KT88 for space/cash reasons now.

  • Goodness me, just downloaded the free 14 day trial of the Neural DSP Tone King Imperial Mk II to test out a 2nd hand Audio Interface I've just picked up.

Absolutely blown away by it - sounds amazing!

  • Yeah the 6L6 sounds immense IMO.

    Pics?

  • Basically it's a really nice 10W Fender, but cheaper.

I'll take some pics, condition is "lightly gigged" but apart from a slightly scratchy gain pot (easily sorted I'm sure) it's in perfect working order.

  • Do you know if there any circuit difference between the three versions or are they identical save for the variety of tubes (and whatever architectural changes go along with that change) - tone stack etc - can't seem to find any info online?

  • I don't know about specific circuit differences but they sound quite different to each other. They all have a boost/drive option which is different on the three - eg it's much higher gain on the KT88 than the 6L6. The tone stacks are also definitely different (although there's only one tone knob on each). On my KT88 the tone control is labelled ISF, which is a proprietary Blackstar thing that changes the overall response of the amp as a whole - https://blackstaramps.com/lessons/blackstar-patents-isf-what-is-isf-and-how-can-you-use-it/ - at most volumes it actually gets brighter if you turn it "down".

The 6L6 has a much more trad tone control.

I also think the (digital) reverbs sound different but that might just be the 6L6 sounding brighter overall.

  • Just catching up after a couple of months of intense work shite. Some strong work in the last few pages.

  • You're doing well, I don't bother learning any new stuff anymore. It made me think of the first thing I do whenever I pick up my acoustic, I'll always strum an open G chord then go into the outro of The Ballad of El Goodo which I segue into this little Chet Atkins style thing in G7 I made up years ago. I do that every single time I pick the Martin up.

What about everyone else? What's the first thing you do when you pick up a guitar? A very Uncle Larry question time type thing. 🙃

  • Interesting question I've never really thought about. Not sure I'm 100% consistent as often picking up a guitar to practice something specific before a gig or rehearsal, but when that's not the case I reckon I default to an autumn leaves fingerstyle version I learnt years ago, often going out of that into a gypsy/klezmer progression in Am.

  • Depends on the guitar i think... and what tuning I left it in. I definititley have my ingrained tics though. Acoustic almost always some litte open g bluegrassy widdle. Or this faux-Nick Drake riff idea for a song that i've been meaning to finish for the last ten years. Oh lawd.

Electric, usually some bluesy Hendrix or Billy Gibbons pentanoodle in E or G. It was the intro Red House a lot last year for some reason. That or Back of Car by Big Star.

I was thinking about this yesterday in that so much of the guitar music I love is not really based in blues but I still go back to the bluesrawk thing as a default. Weird.

If there's a Bigsby within reach it will always end being the Better Call Saul theme (LB again). I saw a video last year claiming that this riff is the new guitar shop Smoke on the Water so I must remember not to offend. Haha!

  • Usually always an open E and a run up the scale, then...

Electric: ashamed to say it's the start of the solo from the black crowes' Hard to handle. I don't know why?
Acoustic: the first verse/turnaround of dylan's don't think twice

  • 90% of the time I pick up an acoustic, so it's nearly always the instrumental bit from Neil Young's Tell Me Why or a few bars of Stephan Grossman's Matesa, to the point where my kids ask 'don't you know any other songs?'

Electric is rare but usually something I learned 30 years ago, eg the beginning of 'Start Choppin' by dinosaur

  • You've made a mistake there. Simply no way that Start Choppin could have been learned 30 years ago, long before it existed.
