  • I did an "ooh" when I saw the lake placid blue one of those. Double-bound / rosewood (ok, laurel) / LPB is a great look on a Tele (ok, Esquire), I think.

    https://www.andertons.co.uk/squier-fsr-classic-vibe-60s-custom-esquire-laurel-fingerboard-in-lake-placid-blue

  • Yeah man. I like a lot about them. I still baulk at nearly £400 for a squier tho but i'm obviously just out of touch.

  • You set on a 60's? I have a MIM Fender classic 50's I don't really play anymore

    ^ not mine

  • We are witnessing the era of £1000 Mexican Fenders, unfortunately.

Gibson just dropped some custom shop korina flying Vs and Explorers that Andertons of Guildford, Surrey are asking nearly nine grand for.

  • Whoa that's nice. I was kind of after a rosewood board but that is a gooood look. NOt sure i'm even in S/H fender budget territory at the moment tbh. I've way overspend on gear lately and was really just after something cheap and cheerful... hit me up if you are srs about selling and i'll have a think tho!

  • I know man, I've mentioned my old 90s MIM strat before, the idea of dropping £1k on one these days doesn't sit right with me. I know i'm just getting old though... plus I'm sure the newer ones are way nicer than the first ones. The hype at the time was that they were just MIA spec but built in Mex, but that clearly isn't/wasn't the case. Heavy multi piece low grade wood, cheaper hardware, ceramic pickups etc. Even Squiers have alnico PU's these days.

  • I def think Fender/Gibson/Squier/Epiphone prices are inflated simply because of the branding. Really, when you think about it, an Elektron Digitakt is £600. An electronic instrument you could make an entire professional-sounding album with. What do you get from Fender for £600? Two planks of wood bolted together with parts made of bent sheet metal, no gig bag or case, and you're still probably going to have to do a set-up on it and maybe replace the nut.

  • or if you're like me, you buy a fender logo on two planks of wood with cast aluminium or steel parts on, then take them off and replace with thin bent sheet metal because retrogrouch reasons.

  • I love that Esquire, lovely... I really miss finding cheap MIJ Fenders on FB and Gumtree, everything seems to have gone up so much in the last couple of years... My MIJ Jag was only $900!

  • Sweetwater have just come back to me (after three fucking business days!) saying they can't send the baritone neck out of the US... 🙄

  • I probably still put too much value on MIJ Fenders due to bias from the 90s when they were better than the American-made instruments. My first MIJ “telemaster” had a binding tuner and the replacement has a pretty poorly-cut nut. Nice and well made apart from that though.

They’ve done some tasty vintage reissues out of Japan lately, there was a great looking Jag in blue with matching headstock. Well over a grand (gbp) though.

  • Since quitting FB I'm missing out on all the local MIJ bargains, probably a good thing, there's so much great Japanese stuff out here, it is crazy...

I've been WFH today so, of course, between phone calls and doing actual work I've been playing the new Squier JM, my Jag and my Tokai Strat in rotation... The Tokai with Mick Brierley pups in it kicks all their arses by a LOOOOOOONG way, Jag comes in second with SD Quarter Pounds in it and third the Squier JM... Pups are bloody loud but a bit scratchy and lacking in guts...

That Tokai fucking sings, instant Radio City era Big Star through my Super Champ, it's quite spectacular...

  • Ha! I knew it!

The reason I want a Strat is so I can play Back of a Car properly. The Strat and Voxiest Strat and Vox sound that ever did Strat and Vox.

  • About to jump on a plane to the US. PM if I can help.

  • Aw, thanks so much, man, but I'm gonna go with plan B... Have a great trip, can't believe you guys are getting to travel, we are still locked the fuck down in Oz, can't even leave the state!!

  • Buy @Pifko's!!! Chuck some vintage 60s Brierleys in it and welcome to Radio City, Tone Town!! 🤪😂

PS I always read that the first Big Star LP was made with Gibson guitars into Fender amps (even tho' you only ever see Chris Bell with a Strat in those early pics)... I always thought Alex was playing a Strat into a cranked Fender amp on Radio City and Third... Here's a pic of him on the back of the first Panther Burns LP, he looks so cute... 330 into a Dual Showman maybe?

  • Radio City is strat all day longi reckon. Sounds like Vox amps to me but some brief google action leads to believe that the internet is full of halfwits with incredibly certain opinions based on tangential bullshit.

  • the internet is full of halfwits with incredibly certain opinions based on tangential bullshit

    I can’t believe it. I just can’t

  • User1. Does anyone know what gtr and amp Lx used on Radio City?

User2 (in a patronising fatherly tone addressed to user1. "He's been pictured with various Gibson and Fender models with humbuckers and p90s over the years, so it's likely it was one of those"

Lurker me. ?!??! Fuck off! Of course he has. Shut up boomer.

  • C'mon Radio City is strat strat strat right?

  • 100%!

Alex fans are really weird... 😬

I've never been on a Big Star forum, I can't begin to even, etc...

  • I could post it from here if you need squire. You’d have to pay the CA sales tax but that’s only 9%.

  • Thanks, man, but I think I'm gonna get it through Stratosphere.com, shipping is a bit more than Sweetwater but the guy I spoke to at Manny's told me they shipped to him here with no problems... Fingers crossed!

  • Today someone on a FB guitar group I’m in posted a Reverb link for this 5w Epiphone Valve Jr that was for collection, half an hour up the road from me. It was listed as ‘Poor’ condition due to a hum. Fair enough, I thought, it might turn into a DIY repair job, but it’s cheap and I like taking things to bits. So I picked it up.

Well, there’s absolutely sod all wrong with it - it does hum a little, but they all do. It’s SO LOUD when you crank it, even with an 8” speaker, but it’s fantastic at bedroom levels as well. I’m so happy with it.

    55 quid it cost me.
