  • thought this worthy of a new post after the old one phizzled out...

    http://www.londonfgss.com/thread8018.html#post289061

    anyone else going?

currently me and my good lady are going and we are meeting 2 others there. got my plus4's, leather hairnet and goggles sorted. cant wait!

  • i've always wanted to do this. but jacqui's warnings mean that i'll pass for this year. good luck on it though, it's supposed to be stellar.

  • i cant wait! just managed to book a hotel with a pool 10mins walk from the start/finish too!!

  • so who's making it this year? i just booked my flights, we're staying in the same castle as last time and planning on doing the short route and getting much more drunk that last year!

    can't wait!

  • You're staying in a castle?! Sounds amazing! I desperately want to do L'Eroica. I reckon next year's the year.

So what's this castle about? And how expensive is it?

  • did you register your bike, was it easy? i bought a de rosa especially for this but now I have no money :(
all the process of registering the bike put me off too. I might change my mind...

  • they've changed the registration details. now only bikes there were build before 1988 are allowed for the races.

  • that is why i bought my de rosa 1984
i thought that they were before 87

  • i've read 88 in a german cycle racing magazine these days

  • I'd love to do L'Eroica. How strict are they on what bikes are used? Would a ss or fixed conversion be ok on the short route if the frame was pre 88? I fear my bike in its current form may not look retro enough.

How about a LFGSS invasion for 2010?

  • yup it's 1987 or earlier, i have gone for a 1982 raleigh that i bought especially, it's costing me 180quid to fly with bikes via ryan air but if you're london area you can get to pisa for more like 100 with bike

these are photos from last year..

and the castle/vineyard with pool and hot-tub is a few miles from the start line and only 40euros per night pre head for our own chalet on the grounds (4 of us)

after going last year, i am going to attend EVERY year till i die. tis amazing!

you don't HAVE to register the bike, you can just sort it out when you get there and i dont know how strict they will be this year about conversions, i will let you know october 12th when i am back in england

  • pre-1987 leaves you a lot of scope.. oh man, I had all this last year, tilover going and doing it.. still looks amazing, probably still can't do it.. gatdammit..!

  • my bike is geared
I am temped again now that i am jobless again...
i read in the website that you had to send picts and everything! that has put me off a bit

  • yeah, mine is geared but i rode with a guy who did 130km on a 1940's fixed humber bike. was awesome, i wish i was doing it fixed but i just couldn't find a decent vintage path bike for my budget, hopefully i will sell mine after l'eroica and have a whole year to get a retro fixed steed in time

btw, anyone know of an italian forum where i could maybe sell my bike at l'eroica? thinking i will put a sign on it and somebody will pick it up over there, in italy a raleigh might be exotic!

  • is the hotel expensive?
I think that you can sell a british bike easy there as it must be special

  • full costs...

entry 35euro (i think?) you get for that.. free food and booze all day, free dinner at the end, insurance, entry and at the end a goody bag which last year featured bottle of wine (l'eroica branded) + l'eroica olive oil, plus nice cotton bag

flights 180 (with bikes) from thursday to tuesday

hotel in luca 30euro for thursday night, hotel in florence 40euro friday night, castle sat and sunday 80euros, hotel monday night in pisa? not sure yet.. not much i hope!

car hire and petrol between 4 of us budgetted 80euros, doubt it will be so much

    bike for l'eroica £300ish

    booze and food 200euro max

    sorted! i am getting excited!

p.s over 3000 people went last year so camping is a cheap option that many people take, getting about in italy however requires a car really

  • i though thta hotels in italy were much more expensive!

  • It's be good to know what the rules/bike regulations are in English.

Wish I could go. Maybe I will manage it. What date is it, tilover?

Edit OK I found the rules and date.

  • it si a crap website, took me ages to find them too

  • Got em, cheers tika.

I love some of the translations, such as the stipulation that gear levers must be on the 'oblique loom tube' (downtube?) and that :

Foreign and Italian riders who are not members of any sport organizations or FCI can join the race only trough the specific request of the daily insurance at the entry. ... Riders with irregular documentations will not join the groups, in case of accident will be denounced to the Police Authority.

[my emboldening] Better join a CC quick or you'll be denounced.

I quite like the expression 'agonistic sports' used in the health section.

    Still, I want to go.

  • when is the actual start?

  • me too

  • Got em, cheers tika.

hehe that's a great way of saying, it's an extra 3 euros to pay for the insurance!
