Cigars

  • For me, the main point of having a freshly rolled custom cigar is to smoke it as soon as you can. I'm sure the corona I bought would have been equally good, if not better had it been aged, but the opportunity to smoke a freshly rolled cigar is fairly rare (at least for us in England). Mr. Paredes was adamant that the moistness of the cigar will have a pretty evident effect on the flavour, i.e. there's a large fluctuation in flavour between a moist cigar, and a slightly more dryed out one. For that reason, I wish I'd bought two so I could have laid one aside for a while...I just couldn't justify dropping the cash at that point in time...

  • It was a very different flavour and texture. I would love to try that as well, one now one for much later.
I was gutted I couldnt get down to Belgravia to grab one myself.

As its getting colder, does anyone know of any indoor smoking areas?
I have a 10week old baby, thats my place out.

  • Bought some cheap tres petit coronas for bonfire night, and I treated myself to an Oliva Serie G moduro robusto.
They arrived yesterday and the Oliva is square, is this normal?

  • Yeah, it's fairly common - more usual with non cuban cigars I think. The cigars are packed firmly into boxes when they're still quite moist... I think.
Just bought a fair few Cohiba Siglo 1's. Haven't smoked any yet, though hoping to try one tonight.

  • I need humidification.
Can someone recommend a cheap but good 40-50 cigar humidor and an accurate hydration meter, plus the humification thing.

I had to chill some Sanchos to kill some mould so need to rehumidify them.

Yes, they're known as "box-pressed" when they're squared off in shape - very common with Padron cigars.

i got the 20 capacity flavour (can easily hold more)
comes with humidifier, hydrometer, fluid and a ring guage guide.

    I like mine.

i have bought cigars many times from them, super quick delivery.
my humidor came in a massive box with shit loads of bubble wrap, well protected.

    highly recommended by me

  • That looks perfect. Are analogue hydrometers any use?

  • Erm, its ok. Providing you set it up ok
    Instructions are included.
I would like a digital one but can't find one fur cheap.
I don't have lots of cigars or for very long so the analog one suffices.

They're absolutely fine in most cases.....unless you're running temperature controlled cabinets with 100's of cigars.

  • Cool. ordered one. Should have done it months ago, but over the summer I was smoking them fairly often, so they didn't stay in the box for long.

  • slippery slope!
now its gonna look empty so you need to order some more cigars to stock it up.
i only have a small one (currently has 8 cigars in it, a personal record haha) but i really want to fill it. just can't afford it :(

next group buy i am gonna get stocked up though.

    Plus this:

And some distilled water, and I'm in business!

  • Wine coolers are the way to go if you want the space. I use them but be sure to inspect them when they're delivered; I have one that has a cracked hinge so doesn't quite sit right. It needs almost constant babysitting to keep the humidity I want but the intact ones are ace. I could leave them for weeks without looking in and they'll still be 65F/65%.

Really, inspect them when they arrive. I sent two back in a row for the cracked hinge. I don't think it's a design flaw so much as shit delivery services.

  • Good to know mate. I will make sure it's checked. Unfortunately I wont be able to check it myself, as it will be being delivered to my rent's place. Do you have an 18 bottle capacity, or 24?

  • Another chance to buy custom rolled cigars from Senor Paredes. Only catch is, you have to buy another cigar from the website before you can get a Paredes...IMO it's worth it.

  • I have 24s but it's the same thing. They'll all do the job but you will constantly want more of them.

I'm keen on a Sr. Paredes but I'm in CancĂșn at the moment* and there is a roller here. He's no level 9 torcedor from Habana but I'm enjoying them. There are also loads of fakes here; the notorious glass-top Cohibas are in abundance.

*pointless boast post. There are also loads of women sunbathing topless. I don't know where else to post that but I'm enjoying it as much as the cigars.

  • You should be enjoying it more than the cigars you wierdo! ;o) Give me a shout when you're back.

  • just smoked an Oliva Serie G, it was a Moduro Robusto (box pressed, if that makes a difference?)
The fucker was a bastard to light, but evened out nicely once it got going.
was remarkably light and smooth, but very enjoyable.
i was expecting something much stronger, considering it had a very dark wrap (this was based on visuals only, im a noob with cigars)

talking of being a noob, as it was near the end, i took a stroll to the kerb to get rid on the end, took a big puff and inhaled like a twat.
    nearly hacked my lungs up!

  • Oliva is one of the non-Cuban marcas that make very good cigars. They're not one that I go for often as they are generally milder than I prefer, but they are consistently well made. I'm a bit surprised you had trouble getting it to light because of their reputation for quality construction but that might have been a humidity issue. Of course, there are variations in any hand-made product.

Box-pressed cigars are no different than their round versions, it's just a matter of preference. There are very few true box-pressed Cubans but they are common in non-Cuban cigars. Just depends on whether you want a square smoke or something round in your mouth. Fnar, fnar.

Dark maduro wrappers give the impression of strength, but as you found, that's not always true. Many very mild cigars use maduro wrappers and, in my experience, it is more common to find maduro varieties to actually be milder. Although they do generally give a slightly different flavour that can be quite nice if that's what you're looking for. A great cigar to compare the two wrappers with is the Padron 1964 Anniversaries.

Glad you enjoyed the Oliva. I'm going to the States to see my family over Christmas and am going to be picking up some non-Cubans as they're much cheaper there. I have Padron Anniversaries, Tatuajes and Camachos on my list at the moment.

If anyone is seriously interested in good non-Cubans, I can look into picking some extras up. If you have specifics, I can look at prices and let you know. The local shop in Reno is Fumare, run by a great guy who is the guy behind the Tatuaje line.

.....if serious, you truly are a gent & a scholar!

    I would be extremely keen to pick-up some Room 101 Conjura Ltd Edition (Camacho), in either 4.75" x 50, or 6.5" x 54......preferably x10?

I can furnish you with said funds ahead of time, or when you're back - let me know?

    Thx in advance! :-)

  • I'm actually not familiar with those. I'll see if I can check if he stocks them and their price.

  • Interesting. They are made by Camacho who I do like a lot, but they appear to be out of stock at most of the online sites I used to use, although I haven't checked everywhere on the interweb.

I know Fumare stocked Camacho so I imagine he'd get this line as well, whether I find them in stock depends on how popular they are.

......I know - I can't get them anywhere outside of the US either!

Room 101 are super-hip at the moment. Check out their marketing stuff, known as the Conspiracy:

And they're very good too - scored a 93 recently for the Conjura range.
