  • Ah, cheers mate.
Was only a little bit, and it appears to only be on the wrap, not inside.
I've 'quarantined' the mouldy ones. Hopefully the others will be fine.

As the weather is picking up, we shall have to arrange a herf sometime.

  • Not cigars, but tobacco.

Here's my review of Davidoff Blue Mixture pipe tobacco.

    http://rumandreviews.com/2012/05/18/davidoff-blue-mixture-pipe-tobacco/

  • Would that be a good tobacco to cut my teeth on Lucifer? I mentioned the other day in AQA that I want to use my dads pipe. Don't even know if i'll like it, just fond memories and all that..

  • I would recommend it. I'll be reviewing quite a few more tobaccos over the coming weeks, so keep your peepers peeled.

If your dad was a pipe man and you have his pipe, get that bad boy fired up! There's no better way to bring a chap's memory to life than with a good smoke. Pipe smoking brings back fond memories of my grandfather - I think of him every time I smoke.

If you've tried other forms of tobacco (cigarettes, cigars) then you'll not struggle with a pipe. Make sure you tamp the tobacco into the bowl with gentle pressure, allowing room for the weed to burn without compacting it too much. Too loose and a consistent burn won't be achieved.
Draw the smoke with your mouth, not your lungs. Sucking from the lungs will pull hot smoke straight into the chest and you'll cough like a loon. Gently puff on the pipe, getting the burn going nice and even, then sit back and relax! Smoke rings are easy with a pipe and the smell is just brilliant. Give it a go nd keep me informed of your progress.

Another good tobacco is Peterson's Nutty Cut. I'm reviewing that one today. It's a lightly flavoured tobacco and is a really pleasant smoke, leaving lovely flavours in the mouth afterwards. Try that one to start with.

I get my tobacco by mail order - try these people:

You can buy samplers of a variety of tobaccos to see which one you really like without buying 50g's worth only to find that you don't like it. Remember to buy pipe cleaners - nothing worse than bitter tar working up the pipe.

    Good luck, and enjoy!

  • Lovely, thank you. Just ordered some cleaning gear and some samples, should be enough to get me started. Got the couple you recommended and some others that look interesting. Amazing selection, can't believe there is so many still.

I'm looking forward to this! will let you know how I get on.

  • Disaster!
Opened my humidor for the first time in a few months, and one of my cigars has mould on it :(

A bit worried they are all fucked now.

    Edit: it may be plume.
It's only on 2 of my ramon allones, and not any of the others.
It's only effecting 1 brand, so I'm thinking its not mould now.
It brushed off easy enough and seems ok.
I'be left the lid open to get the humidity down a bit (was at 80%!)
Planning on smoking one of the RA tomorrow to see what the taste is like.

Was it whitish mould? I was sure some of my pipe baccy has mould too but aftera bit of googling, I learnt that's sugar crystalizing / there is sugar in tobacco/ at least in some virginias. Don't know about cigars though.

  • I would recommend it. I'll be reviewing quite a few more tobaccos over the coming weeks, so keep your peepers peeled.

    ...

I'm struggling here, can't seem to get it to burn consistently. Not sure if I've tamped it too hard or not enough, I seem to be getting a lot of ash left on top.

    Will perservere.

  • Funnily enough I've had a problem with inconsistent burn this week.
I've heard ^ these help. THey sit on the bottom of the pipe bowl and allow air to circulate underneath, like a mini grate. I'll be trying some soon and I'll let you know.

Keep trying, you'll get the hang of it!

  • ^These are a pipe smoking revelation! Totally transforms the experience from what can be a fiddly mess into a doddle. I'll be reviewing them in a week or two.

Until then, here's my Nutty Cut review:

  • To check for mould take a macro photo with a digital camera.
plume has crystals, mould has spores

  • Anyone on here interested in buying a case of Cohiba Siglo VI?
I've got 5 cases of 25 for sale. PM me if interested.

  • Summer seems to have finally found a footing, this can only mean a herf is in order!
Anyone fancy a meet one weekend before the snows come in?

  • Anyone want a few empty cigar boxes before I chuck them in the recycling?

  • Just got a cabinet of 50 Punch Double Coronas in with a box code of Oct 11. The same month and year as my son's birth. The idea will be to smoke one a year around his birthday till he's old enough to join me.

We should have around 33 left at that time.

  • There is a Hunters & Frankau Cigar tasting event at the Soho Whiskey Club on 18th of September.

    Anyone fancy coming along?

The whiskey they are pairing the cigars with is Genfarclas.

  • I want to go but I doubt I'll be out of work in time.

  • I'm out now for the same reason. damn.

  • in pubs and in the work place at ones desk ! ?

  • If one smokes a pipe with an air of contemptuous defiance, no-one will dare question your authority.

You may smoke where you please.
