  • What's up with the field dominance on that vid Dunc?

  • I know. It's all over the place. The cam spits out .mov's but they aren't very good. Plus speeding it up it looses a lot of quality.

    must try harder

  • i thought the concept though to execution was rubbish,

matt roe, davey watson and darryl tocco are very talented riders, very talented indeed

  • Nice. Damn I need a better camera!

  • yeah, decent camera makes a huge difference...

i have been using a panasonic gv 400 - released a few years ago, on ebay from between £450 - 600.

Been outbid on 2 in the last 2 weeks!! I have used the schools one, which i bought from a budget for sports filming and well my own use!!

    gave it back today :(

it is 3ccd but in all honest performs as good if not better than a lot of camcorders in the £1600 range. The low light capabilities are awesome...

funnily enough, panasonic worked closely with surf film makers to come up with features and tech that would best suit that type of filming... unfortunately it's predecesor the gv 500 was just shit, these guys seem to mess it up a lot. The other camera known for it's amazing ability is the sony trv 900, very rare to find but great qulaity.

i am afraid i look to be getting this new 24p HD stuff, not sure on it though, will have to do some research, again, panasonic have a lead on this for decent price, think their camera at the £800 is amazing quality, uses mix of 3ccd and hd and has massive hardrive.

tootalltim is the bomb at this shit and could help you out with this sort of stuff, production guru

    easy

  • yo d!, check this out, only £70

  • I have a Steadycam Jr

Really good but very sensitive in wind, plus you need 2 hands to operate it, so not ideal for follow cam.

@Dayno - I usually shoot on a Z1, it's a great cam but I don't own one. I'd love to invest in one, or even a Z5. Those Panasonics are good tho. I used the P2 on a job recently and liked that too.

  • Duncan - cheers man, i been doing a lot of research after having to hand the panasonic back to school, think the canon hf 11 or panasonic tm 300, as far as hand helds go they look to be the bomb, both flash memory as well, excellent low light res which is important for filming near the surf asnd at the trails. Steady cam's look amazing, expensive right?

Just went and saw one of the bgoys today I ride bodyboard with (yeah it's not stand up but we both ride stand up and hell, you can't get pitted on astand up in the waves we surf) he's the dude pulling inot all the pits on here, can't wait to get out there after so long... anyways, will keep an eye out for your friends shop..... enjoy

  • Great video. Nice flow throughout.

  • thanks for editing and posting d!

@dayno - love that vid, the waves are amazing

I have a Merlin, I always wanted a Jr, but could never find or afford one - my friend found one in a charity shop for £8 - the whole fucking thing, boxed, mint (this was 1998-1999).

The Merlin is also useless in wind.

If you want low light capabilities the Canon 5D (and now 7D) are simply off the scale - in a league all of their own - you can rent out a RED1 and it will not come close to the image the Canon's can resolve in low light - stick a f/1.2 lens on the front and you are into comedy territory, you can light a room with a candle and get a wonderful clean footage.

Here is some footage I took in near darkness - quite how dark it is does not come across in the clip, but it was very dark, the sort of light level that would have cheap camcorders showing a black screen.

  • Lovely video, Marlon and Duncan--well done!

  • Thanks Ollie.

@Tynan, the Jr. is also fairly sensitive in windy conditions due to the gimble it works on, and it's a bit of an artform using it, but gives good results. You're welcome to borrow it if you want, although the onboard monitor is on the blink.

I love the Red cams and cant wait to shoot with one, but will remembr the Canon's shud I ever need low light capabilities.

  • Dayno, that footage looks really nice. The thing I liked about the P2 was it's flash memory.

(If you get to Ramjet, ask for Michelle and tell her I sent you!)

  • Don't suppose anyone works for Vimeo do they? I've managed to lock myself out of my account by setting up another email address, switching it to the "main" one, then deleting my other and not setting a password before I logged out. Now when I try to log back in neither email address is recognised so I can't just click "forgot password".
    /Spack.

    Where? Where?? WHERE??!

  • The Vimeo help team have direct emails/skype/instant messenger things. Contact them that way.

  • Marlon/Duncan - what camera did you actually use for the track day thang?

Had a chance to work with them a few times this year when we rented from RedLondon. They come with their own tech assistant so it was a piece of cake to get to grips with.

Ridiculously clever modular design... The guy showed us dozens of configurations and the footage we got was "shit-hot". On top of that the work flow was so smooth... really nice easy shoots with great results!

Sorry I should have added - I have contacted every possible email I could find on the site - though not via skype I have to admit - for the past two weeks and havent had any replies.
Will give the skype thing a go though.

Good vid fella's, gives a good idea about what a day out at HH is like nice.

The surf footage is lurvly for water housing stuff, not sure the set up yet.

@ Tynan - still's camera? I was talking along thelines of camcorders sorry, any advice on the £1000 ish market?

Like i mentioned the tm300 is meant to be pretty shithot for the price and it's a handheld.

look forward to some more stuff coming up..

  • The Canon 5DII does HD video...
