Martin, or broken_777 on this here forum.
Used to be on BLB, now freelance. All the boy does is build wheels, and man he is good at it. Cheap too. PM him...

But be prepared for him to never, ever, ever reply.

  • I've not been into 14&Co yet, but those prices are a bit steepish. I too recommend an OTP.

    Steel:
    [classic] Ellis-Briggs Fixed
    [modern] Condor Potenza

    Aluminium:
    Cinelli Bootleg Mystic Rats
    Trek T1

The classiest is the Ellis-Briggs Fixed. I think that would be hard to beat.

  • How much is an FBM sword? Sorethroat's turquoise one, that I clapped the other night, is absolutely to die for. The new fork is lovely.

Cheers, they took aaaages to come though, but worth the wait

  • @ Harry Major - thanks for that, I'll PM him now.

@ Archi Pelago - thanks too but going to try Martin first - I'd rather give the work to a forum member working independently than a shop

  • @jon_b - you might want to try arup too. He's a forum member and builds excellent wheels.

  • thanks Andy

  • I'd say give building the wheels yourself a bash. Its not that tricky, especially with non-dished track wheels. The real art is the tensioning and truing (took me ages, still not satisfied). If you're not happy with your truness/tension you can still get someone to finish them off for you.

  • +1 to what Smallfurry said, the actual lacing is dead easy if you take your time. My first wheelbuild still isn't prefect but I guess getting them totally true and tensioned correctly just takes a bit more practise.

  • I've never built but have no problem truing, is that the hard part done then?

  • truing a few loose spokes is different to tensioning a wheel from scratch and truing.

  • I thought so, tensioning sounds like the tricky bit

  • you can still get someone to finish them off for you.

    Wheelbuilders happy ending?

    I don't trust my skills to build a wheel that'll support my 100 Kilo + weight :(

  • odge/ jacob / andy flg - aint a bad bunch of guys to build a wheel by.
25 aint that bad considering the skills of them guys.
had a couple done by them and they're both perfect as far as i'm concerned.

  • £25 labour cost is perfectly normal for London's famous London really, I've heard worse, like £50 from certain Cyclesurgery.

my LBS does £35 including the spokes/nipple, which is pretty good (DT Swiss too).

cycle surgery on holloway road fixed a hub i took in in exchange for a packet of cookies on saturday morning. i know it's not building a wheel but i like the guys in that shop. shame they're so overpriced if that's true.

  • Nah, can't be as bad as Tony Dafoney's mate who sell cheap wheelset that he build for like, £400.

That's practically building the wheel for free. Which LBS???

  • free? how much do you pay for your spokes??

    £35 - £20 for build, £15 for spokes.

  • ^ Ed - thats pretty good what's your LBS?

  • hahaha that's some creative misspelling,

or is it what the kids are calling going brakless these days?

brilliant - I hereby declare to call all brakeless riders brake leavers

  • Goes on the list with Windshadow (slipstream) as great words/phrases that the forum has created.

  • I don't think anyone has plugged Dale's (dogsballs) £10 wheel builds, I'm very happy with mine.

Action Cycles in Wimbledon, having said that, that what I was quoted at Christmas time when I got the wheel build.
