In related but non funny news, diesel emissions especially when increased during engine idling, are known to increase death rates from covid and other respiratory conditions. Can't look at ice cream vans the same way since I learnt this.

excellent point.

I always thought it more than faintly idiotic to have a (usually rather dirty) diesel engine idling away while kids crowded around the vehicle and usually sitting outside a venue that attracted kids.

Apparently the largest UK manufacturer of ice cream vans is switching to electric as a result of increased demand since the ULEZ was announced. WIll probably take a while for the old ones to be retired but change is afoot...

Just saw that they are offering a retrofitting service too. I suppose demand will only be in London at first but hopefully it'll catch on elsewhere...

ACSHUALLYYY, smoked foods are more carcinogenic (I do get the joke, but it's worth noting!).
