  • Please save something for Mr Mamnick

  • Does he make the same mistakes as you?

  • @Señor_Bear

I think a useful guide in these sort of circumstances is to ask whether the subject of the joke is a member of a group that might in some way be considered to be vulnerable, marginalised or disenfranchised in some way?

The lower the level of “privilege” the more likely people (in this community and beyond) are to be offended. All else being equal, jokes about black people are less likely to be acceptable than jokes about white people, jokes about women less likely to be acceptable than jokes about men, jokes about poor people less likely to be acceptable than jokes about the wealthy, and jokes about gender non-binary people are less likely to be acceptable than jokes about gender-binary people.

Anyway my bidet time is up. Before you post check not only your own privilege, but that of the people you are joking about. Hope that helps.

  • There's an informative South Park episode about this very subject.

  • Edit: I just hope this kitten has not in any way been involved in any kind of deed that could possibly hurt those poor defenseless jelly babies

Now I've been alerted to the fact that there was a rape "joke" here. You should note that I lack a sense of humour on anything rape or homophobic. It is bannable, I will ban. 😠

  • Most of us can only dream of making decisions with your sure-footedness.

  • I still think it was a fat joke. Anyway, I'm not trying to upset people. And clearly they were, so I edited it.

    Should I do something more?

  • I know, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try - I’d hate to be the reason you settled for second best, faced with a goal you viewed as personally unobtainable. Maybe CBT could help you?

  • Maybe CBT could help you?

I saw this listed as an option on a friend's Adult Work page and it took me a while, since both she and I were motorcyclists in the 90s, to work out that she wasn't offering Compulsory Basic Training

  • one has to be a white person of a certain age

There's probably age and class coded in gammon too, but less precisely than race and gender.

  • I still think it was a fat joke

I think you're right, in the sense that it would have worked just as well as a response to "Court dismisses woman's paternity suit against rugby union team"

  • Age, yes - the arteries have to harden sufficiently and the blood pressure climb high enough.

Class - I don't really see that, I think the port and stilton diet is probably the optimal choice for a nice rosy complexion to be attained.

I think those trying to suggest that Gammon is aimed at the white working class are acting in bad faith here - it's the same thing as Mogg calling those seeking to frustrate Brexit "the elite".

  • I think those trying to suggest that Gammon is aimed at the white working class are acting in bad faith here

Regardless of good faith, I think they're inaccurate - I've always seen it as more of a lower middle class (petit bourgeois) thing

  • I'd associate "red faced and sweating with rage" with gout, the Telegraph, and golf.

  • You’ve spent two weeks defending a shitty joke that wasn’t actually funny. If you can’t see how you’ve fucked up the joke is on you at this point.

  • You’ve spent two weeks defending a shitty fattist rape joke that wasn’t actually funny. If you can’t see how you’ve fucked up the joke is on you at this point.

  • fattist

    Jimmy Carr:

I once had a heckler accuse me of being fattist. I said no, I think it's you that's fattest.

Is this fattist or just a pun? I laughed.

  • The punchline was definitely about being fat. Against someone who directly contributes to rape culture so whilst distasteful I don't particularly care

  • I’d rim ya just for that post.

  • Not sure if this is true or not.

The term Gammon was first coined by Charles Dickens to describe a "large, self-satisfied, middle aged man who professes an extreme patriotism in large part to disguise his essential selfishness and corruption."

  • Its from Nicholas Nickleby

The time had been, when this burst of enthusiasm would have been cheered to the very echo; but now, the deputation received it with chilling coldness. The general impression seemed to be, that as an explanation of Mr. Gregsbury’s political conduct, it did not enter quite enough into detail; and one gentleman in the rear did not scruple to remark aloud, that, for his purpose, it savoured rather too much of a 'gammon' tendency.

The meaning of that term—gammon,' said Mr. Gregsbury, 'is unknown to me. If it means that I grow a little too fervid, or perhaps even hyperbolical, in extolling my native land, I admit the full justice of the remark. I am proud of this free and happy country. My form dilates, my eye glistens, my breast heaves, my heart swells, my bosom burns, when I call to mind her greatness and her glory.

  • In the microcosm of this thread live all the current forum ills. There are tons of other threads where people are busy calling each other cunts and shouting, very few where people are riding.

I guess that which used to unite us is no longer there so all we're left with is discussing that which divides us.

It's been a slow and miserable demise.

    Where's that flounce thread?

  • Easiest way to do it is PM @velocio and ask him to delete your account.
