Grew up on that. Offered it to the kids and they were on the verge of reporting me to childline.

Yes. I like hot mustard and this stuff is definitely a cut above Colman's.

^ looks exactly like a shoe polish tin :p
Anchovies are just amazing, lighting up all the taste buds. I can't believe I only discovered them last year. Also amazing in tomato sauce.
patat oorlog:(Netherlands)A fast food dish of fries (US)/chips (UK) with mayonnaise, peanut sauce and usually onion, sometimes also including curry ketchup. But no mustard ;)

Is powdered mustard in a tin (Colmans) not just ready mixed mudtard before it's ready mixed?
-
• #78513
No, they add more than just water to stabilize and preserve the mixture.

No. The ready-mix has other stuff in it as filler, colouring, preservative. Powder is now 100% mustard flour, although apparently in the olden days it was cut with cornflour to maintain a consistent price (1d for the small oval tin) from year to year regardless of fluctuations in the mustard harvest.

Now I'm imagining there's a job in Trading Standards involving snorting mustard powder to check its purity. Ouch!

1 Denarius?

1 Denarius?
Yes, if you insist on speaking Latin, but you must also pronounce £ as "libre" to be self-consistent. Characteristically of English, the poshos who were in charge of naming things used French from Latin, so £.s.d is officially libre solidus denier, but the plebs used the Germanic words pound shilling penny. For the same reason, animals are German in the field and French on the table e.g. cattle/beef, sheep/mutton, swine/pork.

Shippams is a million times better than Gentleman's Relish, plus it's gender neutral.

More significantly in terms of taste, it also includes acetic acid. If you mix it yourself you can tune the taste by using plain water, or varying amount of vinegar of your choice.

Colmans use citric acid, not acetic acid. It's covered under my comment on preservatives, along with the sugar and salt.
