Aren't the Poles a bit racist though? I hear they don't like people who talk funny. If only we had some kind of phonetic guide-almost like a linguistic map. That would really aid comprehension whilst possibly providing some serendipitous humor!

I am reluctant to use it too but you try it once and you realise that some people just have fuck all to contribute so it makes your forumenging experience better.

I imagine it's similar when you get old and choose to develop selective hearing or an intermittent bad back that means you don't have to talk to anyone you don't want to or do anything you don't want to do...

It's interesting to see familiar territory as seen from an external viewpoint. The whole Red Atlas is fascinating for that very reason.

There was a good article about nationalistic Polish amateur metal detectorists in the Graun recently who get wasted on vodka then go hunting for WWII memorabilia.

Sounded much more fun than the fucking nerds that do it here.

I've never tried metal-detecting, it looks quite relaxing, yet with a sort of meditative aspect that I find appealing. Probably very boring, without the Vodka+landmine aspect.

I reckon pretty much all hobbies are good if you give them a chance. Golf, dogging, stamp collecting. Anything to find peace away from the absurdity of modern western life.

I went sailing last weekend, that was fun - if not a little hair-raising. Luckily I appear to be losing my hair so no one could tell.

I was going to mention Detectorists as well.
