I really don't get what's up at the moment. Banning far more people than usual, and yet each time it's at the end of a series of very obviously stupid things by those people.

Look... we're a cycling site... rape jokes, cocks, porn, racism, anti-Semitic comments... they will get you banned. And if you've been banned once or twice before, the bans get exponentially longer and then become indefinite.

Over the past several months a few people have fed off each other's increasingly offensive humour to the point that a few found it acceptable to move into the niche territory of highly offensive and no longer funny posts such as rape jokes, anti-Semitic jokes and homophobic jokes.

This has been contained mostly in the memes, gifs, moderators, and football threads, and probably involves fewer than 10 people.

Because they believe it's now acceptable, they've become more relaxed about shooting off such missives, which eventually culminated yesterday in saddle posting a rape 'joke' and then being banned for it. (And edscoble was banned for a short time a couple of days ago for posting porn.)

Likely what happens next is that over the next few weeks people report more (as a result of seeing something being done) and I act more (as a result of getting a stronger message from the majority that they want me to), and basically a much harder line is taken in which the people posting material that makes light of racism, rape, sexism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, etc are then banned for various lengths of time (or permanently)... and the sun comes out and we all ride our bikes and the forum is temporarily at peace and happy.

Then when Summer ends we can begin the circular pattern again.

The only question really left to answer is who gets to sit out most of the next few months as they wilfully ignored all the warning signs. We should take bets.
