XH your complaint that "viral" is now used for "video on the internet" is suspiciously similar to my old-as-the-hills bugbear that "meme" is now used for... well i don't know. all of that ^^ lot.
i'm not making any value judgments, some of it i find funny, some of it really not. but as a phenomenon this lot needs a new collective name i think.
the moment it got a fixed set of formats/parameters and started to be shared deliberately and knowingly I think it became something different from the original definition of "meme".
and before some points it out, i don't think "sort-of meme" covers it either.
answers on a postcard...

Since I watched 'How To Get Ahead In Advertising' I just can't take the idea of working in advertising seriously.

Sequence some dodgy RNA plasmids, bung them in a suitable vector and hey presto...it'll go viral.
If your clients work in marketing, Ebola would be a good place to start.

^^^see also mainstream media use of "troll" for anyone busted saying something punishably illegal on the netz... particularly twitter for some reason. haven't quite figured out why the entire media seems to think that that particular platform is somehow special or different from any other?
likewise "hack" for any theft/spying/general invasion of privacy more contemporary that going though someone's bins.
fuck. sorry. i know!
