...do you suppose that manufacturers would stay in business while offering such a narrow range of lengths? .
I'm sure you're right about the science and crank length etc, but plenty of companies stay in business when they've got absolutely no right to - eg Nurofen. Logically nobody would ever pay £2.50 for a packet of Nurofen at Boots when you can buy the identical product but without the brand name, from the same shop, for 20p. Sometimes companies stay in business just because people are stupid.

Re: crank lengths
Whatever Burrows and Obree say, the actual science says crank length doesn't matter, in the sense that it has no measurable effect on power output or biomechanical efficiency.
If it were actually important, do you suppose that manufacturers would stay in business while offering such a narrow range of lengths? Few crank models are available with more than 10% difference between longest and shortest, even though riders vary in limb length by much more than this.
Well if tester says it...
I managed to convinced a colleague that his cranks is 165mm, he been riding for 2 months, saying he think he need 170mm as the original length was 'too spinny'.
I told him that it's actually a 172.5mm cranks (was an old road cranks with a single chainring), I reckon it's all in our mind really.

does the old wives tale of "your height in CM, is the crank length required in MM" true?
If so, anyone know where i can get 198mm cranks from? -

It doesn't make it right or wrong, only that your colleague shouldn't have right to voice any opinions.
Does he also work at Evans?
