  • I hear red squirrels are off the menu too... Bastards...

You'd be very welcome to come and eat all the grey ones round me- we've got millions.

    Plus Parakeets, somewhat strangely.

  • Or pitbull crosses.

  • or children

  • Swan?

Aren't swans all property of the Queen though?

  • there was a QI about this. only one breed of swan found in the ok is covered by the law, IIRC.

    General Ignorance
Most of the swans in England are free and do not belong to anyone (forfeit: the Queen), only mute swans are owned by the Queen. Apart from the royals, the only other people who can eat swan are Fellows of St John's College, Cambridge on June 25. Swans have a fishy taste, although the best-tasting ones are fed on oats.

    also:

The last swan-keeper to raise birds for the table was Dick Dalley, now in his 70s. He was principle swanherd at Abbotsbury, where he was in charge of “the world’s only herd of managed wild swans.”

He says that he and his colleagues would prepare about six swans a year for the Earl of Ilchester’s dinner table. “They were eaten when they were about five or six months old.” The “top weight for an eating bird was 44lbs.”

I've actually been to the swannery at Abbotsbury

  • Wow, 20 kilos of yum.

  • Vampiric knowledge FAIL. Unless it was aids sanctified by the Catholic Church of course.

  • Because cats and people are not considered food (though **both **maybe considering an extreme survival situation)

  • Pea?..

  • Which meat eating lands you in prison? Outside of cannibalism and property theft I don't think eating any animal would get you put in prison would it?

Might be an interesting argument in court.

I've certainly no desire to do it but I believe its legal to eat cats, dogs, horses etc... as long as they're your own property. Might be issue with slaughtering animals in a non approved area though.

    Swan?

You can eat it, you just can't kill it yourself

  • There's not many animals left you can kill yourself for consumption. You can't even keep a rabbit for a stew anymore.

If it's on your own land and for your own pot, there's plenty. For choice among the common species close at hand, I'd take Canada Goose, since it delicious and simple to prepare, whereas pigeon and rabbit barely repay the effort of cooking.

No word on parakeet; a search for recipes yields only food for the noisy green bastards, not recommendations on preparing them for the table.

  • best thing about goose is that cooking one will keep you in bloody good roast potatoes for ages

  • Goose is shit for roasting.

  • After all this meat eating waffle this was a real breath of fresh air... real life "LOL".

  • ^Isn't it "Yo Dawg" anyway?

I don't think I've ever had goose. They are not a very common thing to eat in Finland. But just yesterday I watched an old episode of (Jeremy Brett's) Sherlock Holmes. It had a blue jewel and plump geese. Them birds looked like mighty tasty eatin'!

  • If Turkey is so nice why do we only eat it at Xmas ? (and it's bloody American)
Goose is awesome, and if you can get it Fois Gras is the best taste in the world (not very PC).
