was it you scoot who posted the pic of your dad on the bike in the hipster thread? just remember as i thought that photo was awesome cool
-
• #21578
Yeah man. I've got the counter-part photo of my mum on a motorbike too, wearing white plimsolls and wayfarers, effing hipster. They both used to be motorbike mad and hang out at the Ace cafe with the Hells Angels.
What do I do? Sit at LMNH with my macbook, drinking lattes.
/not as cool as my parents fail

Names three things that are "cool." Claims not to be "cool."
Post-modernism. You're doing it right?

Names three things that would desperately like to be "cool", but aren't

Those things are not cool. Those are things are pretentious and boring.
Then again I bet it was pretty pretentious to hang around the Ace cafe on a motorbike 20 years ago.

20 years ago*, definitely. If you were there 50 years ago, you're cool.
*Actually, it wasn't even there 20 years ago, it was closed between 69 and 97

Latte - cool? Nah, a latte should be hot.
LMNH isn't old enough to have the legendary status of Ace. You never know you're kids might end up saying the same things about you

It's also completely synthetic, like the revived Ace. The original Ace as biker hangout was user-generated, to use the modern vernacular, and the Ton Up boys were proper outlaws, not a bunch of hipster wannabes.

^^^ Oh, maybe I've imagined that bit then, they certainly hung around Watford and the nearby motorways with their bike crews though.
^^ Ha maybe I should get someone to take some artful black and white photographs of me sitting in there so I can prove it in 30 years.

I'd never heard of Ton Up boys until I was researching for my dissertation last year, they're quite an unheard of subculture compared to mods and skinheads etc.
Here's a picture of my dad at the Ace cafe last year, probably why I got confused:

Mid life crisis bike, fake Harley, revived Ace. Possibly the three least cool things in bike culture. I think you're being true to your genetic predisposition on the coolness spectrum with your Mac & Latte at LMNH.

Ouch! Harsh and not really true. He's had motorbikes since he was 18, he lives in Jakarta so that's not his bike and even if it's not as good as it used to be the Ace cafe is still a legendary biker spot. So go easy on my poor dad, he's 50 this year, give him a break.
I'm going to stop clogging the meme thread with talk of bikes and dads now. Sorry to everyone who was expecting memes.
