Their lack of real responsibility just makes me more angry that they're a heavily subsidised tourist attraction.*
*And one that I am not convinced really brings in more tourists than we'd have in their absence. People don't go to Paris and say, "this is lovely, but I wish they had some monarchs". For one, we'd make more money out of the palaces if we got rid of the royals and turned them into museums.

No we wouldn't. Museums are free.

Mind you a third of the world was watching on Friday, that's incredibly good PR for Britain.
-
• #19213
the alternate side to that though is we just set back the average American's impression of English people by 30 years as they'll all think we're queen loving, flag-waving royalists again.

• #19214
Again? Don't think that's ever changed...

this certainly won't have helped though.

Not all museums are free. Also, not all parts of free museums are free.

i'm non-plused about the monarchy but I thought this was very interesting.

@Spotter - I disagree with the 2nd and 3rd parts. I don't think the monarchy bring in more tourists than we'd otherwise get without them. He says the yanks come over here instead of France because we have a real monarchy inhabiting our castles.** Unfortunately for him, France is the most visiting tourist destination in the world.**
As for the political side of things, an elected president (plus elected house of lords) would curb any of the worries that parliament could do what it pleases.
I don't have any knowledge of the finances but my republicanism doesn't come down to money.

pedants :-)
Many of the the royal palaces are already open to tourists, and are already really expensive.
The Tower of London,
Buckingham Palace,
Sandringham,
Windsor Castle, etc.Getting rid of the royal family would make tourists less likely to want to visit them, not more.
