Anyone got a 17 or 18 tooth freewheel they want to get rid of?
(Preferably not dicta, but also don't want to spend WI amounts... Somewhere in between)

• #5706
Might have a Shimano 17t Louis. Will check at the weekend.
Price = 1 x harvey head
-
• #5707
What's your value to a Harvey head, because I've not got any going spare.
-
• #5708
Echo SL 108 trials Louis? Just like mine but in black, brand new, yours for 45, usually retails for 60.
-
• #5709
sounds just like mine
so they can hear him coming?
-
• #5710
They'll only be able to hear me on a polo court, my polo bike will be fixed on the road once more!
Kev, if you value Harvey heads at a fiver I'll take your shimano one, beagle, way the trials one, but won't be able to afford it for a week or two.

Louis, it's sitting in my drawer anyway and you can have it first and then pay me later.
Apollo, you can actually make it silent by either disassembling it and putting grease between the ratchet and the pawls or by dripping heavy oil between the gaps. AFAIK they come new packed with very little grease and you are advised to spray GT85 to thin out the grease before bedding in the freewheel.
The only problem with the above is that gunk might build up between the pawls and ratchets which might lead to the freewheel skipping and damaging it. That said Danny (Czech guy) who was at the LO did open it up and greased it to reduce the sound and he said there's no problem.
Frequent disassembling and regrease could be a solution but I can't be asked, just GT85 once a week and it has been serving me loud and well!

once a week?!
-
• #5713
I think they come with too thick grease from the factory, which when teamed with heavy trials use can cause damage if the pawls don't engage properly and they slip, if you bed them in by riding around a fair bit or thinning the grease out then it's not a problem. I'm not sure if polo would put quite as much through the freewheel as trials so shouldn't be a problem, maybe on the charge but I doubt it due the the massively high gear we use.

Reasonable assumption in the majority of cases.

40" gear is generally considered low.
Lower ratio => More torque at the wheel, Less speed at the wheel
Someone linked to a Scottish bike "retail consultancy" which listed Soma, IRD etc in the brands offered. Spotted the IRD Defiant Single Freewheel (16T-18T). Cro-mo sprocket, £40ish
Couldn't find I emailed them yesterday (no reply yet) to ask whether they knew how many points of engagement it had.

Massively high compared to trials, possibly the only time we can make such a claim on our daft spinny bikes.
-
• #5716
brief googling, looks like 26" trials is typically 1.2:1 - 1.5:1, Polo is 1.5:1 up to 2:1, depending on experience and awesomeness.

Massive.

and size of court and leg power?
Having said that, are there any players that change ratio based on court size?
-
• #5719
Yes.
Not me... But I know of others doing it.

• #5720
Only boring people, who take polo way too seriously...

http://www.puckstop.com/acatalog/Bauer_2100_Combo_Hockey_Helmet.html
Bidded on the wrong size stupidly and forgot to cancel my bid! It's a £70 helmet that you can have for what I paid - £41, proper bargain.
It's in immaculate condition, no scratches, cracks, dents etc. It was listed as "worn once" and I believe it.
Size is L i.e. Large / 7 - 7 5/8 / 22" - 24" (56-61 cm)
anyone wanna try this on at Westway Urban Edge Festival Bike polo demo - Sunday 20th Oct? I can bring it with me...

I did bring a bigger chainring to the UK champs because the courts were waaaay bigger than Powerhouse in Manchester, but the surface felt so slow I didn't bother switching.

Yeap, also after playing in the wet.

Contrary to what you said I am pretty sure they dont use thick grease and if they do there is very little or close to non.

Punkture got one already.
Nope. No t-shirt, will drop him a PM and see if he can bring it to polo.
