  • my experience: spd pedals break more often. Time cleats need to be replaced more often. spd pedals unclip easier. time hold you tighter. #ymmv

  • Has anyone got a pair of those identiti bolt on v brake mounts in their parts box that they could be persuaded to part with?

I snapped my v brake mount on my forks in Cambridge and a pair of those, or even one, would solve the problem

    +1

i havent done a plus one in ages. do they still work?

    Good summary

I have had numerous problems with my current SPDs and am gonna give Time a go.

  • Used to run SPD for my road bike but went straight to Time for polo and must say I fell abit in the first two sessions but thereafter it was fine.

  • Hkratio's summary is missing a comment on price... But I guess that's because everyone knows spds are the cheaper option?

  • Is it cheaper/better to run spds or time attacks then? I've only ever ran spds cos that's what i inherited on a 2nd hand bike and stuck with it!

  • Time do give you more float before they start to disengage, so can be argued if you move around the bike a lot, your knees at least, will enjoy them more.

I rocked Time when I used to race, and I do prefer them to SPD, but as I work in the industry and seem to fall into Shimano odds and ends repeatedly, I've switched to SPD as it's cheaper (for me) to stick them on every bike and have one pair of shoes. Time cleats are lovely in terms of motion (brass) but suck in terms of wear and tear (brass).

I doubt I'd make the switch back to Time now as I have about 6 pairs of Shimano pedals, and despite people saying they break/wear out quickly, I've only had that (wear and tear being low) experience with the very low end £30 sets, and the very high end £130 sets. I've never broken a spring, but I have bent axles, and both the times I did that the impacts were severe to the point I thought 'fair enough'.

  • I have never had a pair of SPD pedals break on me and I have run the same pedals on my polo, road and fixed gear bikes for the last two years. I did have one pair of shoes up until a few weeks ago too (gross). I tried Time and just couldn't get on with them with my dodgy knees.

  • SPDs were terrible on my knees... Bad knees = Time pedals

  • I've never had a set of spds fail on me in 10yrs. The ones on the polo bike are 5yrs old and are the cheapest ones they make. Doubt I'll ever change.

  • so there you have it. Clearer now?

  • Speedplay pedals: great for not injuring other players with your bike, bad for durability of the cleat and stability of your ankle in an emergency-dab/comedy-jog situation. Also, shoe compatibility is poor.

tl;dr: Don't use Speedplay pedals for polo.

  • so there you have it. Clearer now?

In other words tl:dr buy whatever, it doesn't make a difference.
