I'm really sorry if this has been covered before and if I had a go on one it might become blindingly obvious but why do people go nuts for old mountain bikes?

I believe it's because the geometry is not suspension corrected on older MTB frames (wasn't available). You can run a fairly short rigid fork and maintain a high BB and good steerer angle. Modern MTB/Jump frames are mostly corrected for suspension forks.

It's for hopping up walls and the like (frame protector), it's not currently against the rules (as it's part of the frame and not an addition).
