  • This weekend, we had lots of people coming along and playing for the first time, and lots of us lent them bikes/mallets, and that's fine. We all did the same when we first played.

What I don't really like is people turning up time after time borrowing my shit, and even just walking up to my bike and not asking and getting it on the court. It's not on. You're best to learn to play on your own bike, and it really doesn't take that much effort to make a mallet. There are lots of people that can tell you how, or just google it. It's not rocket science.

Don't get me wrong, it's cool to borrow stuff the first couple of times you come along to play, but beyond that, I think the onus is on you to build a mallet and if needs be, build a polo bike. We've all done it.

    Did somebody really do that?
    Fucking bad form.

  • yes. not going to name names on here.

  • name and shame

  • yeah. mike... you borrow my can of beer again and you're going down.

    but...as gabes says be polite^

  • shhh, ray.

  • sorry, didnt realise that you were being serious....outta here...continue.

  • thanks.

  • ...on that note though...why mention that here...not court side?

  • just walking up to my bike and not asking and getting it on the court.
imho, that's not on in any context.

  • Sucks to have a freewheel

  • indeed.

  • Maybe just emphasize the fact that new folks need to ask before jumping on any equipment, occasionally bikes were passed on to the next person between games without so much as a nod which is a little irksome.

What happens if a bike is broken by the way? Work it out between you? Just asking like...

  • i would assume the person who borrowed it would pay for the damage. it's only fair really.

  • you bend it you mend it

  • I have left my bike in the past, the old grenn one, someone completly fucked my back wheel, he didnt pay a penny for it, now i more reluctant to borrow my bike

I hope that wasn't addressed to me, I did use your bike a few times on Saturday, but I think I asked every time. As I understood it on Saturday that was sort of the point, that the beginners could come down, and would have use of the bike, which is why people probably did use bikes without asking (not saying it's right, but probably why it happened).

Yesterday there were less noobs though, just me and Wen, or am I am wrong? Maybe I missed something.

Either way, apologies if I did use a bike without permission (though I can't remember it), and I've now got my own mallet (thanks to Mike for giving me the head), with a few more on the way, and I'm going to start looking for bike or bits to put together. Which brings me to my next question. Does any have a polo bike or polo-suitable frame which they want to sell?

  • Maybe it's worth taking some tools and a handfull of mahoosive cogs down to the court and offering to set someones bike up to be "Polo ready" for £30 a throw?

  • John, no, wasn't aimed at you, you were polite and asked everytime, and you are making moves to sort out your own equipment, which is all good.

  • Was it me?

  • yes.

  • in that case i blame Horatio

  • john H - ebay, forum, bikeshops...normal places when looking for a bike.

might be worth starting a ebay polo finds thread?

  • As a sidenote, it's also not very cool to borrow someone's bike, ride it super aggressively (just because they do doesn't mean you can necessarily control it as well as them - especially your first few weeks) and then rant on about how crap it is or call it a piece of shit. They aren't made to be broken, they're made to play polo (which can break them).
