I don't get why people need to pump their tyres to more than 100psi, we have poor quality road in London, surely the jarring from the stiff tyres isn't helping ride comfort one bit.
that or you really want to look like you're operating a jackhammer while having those super narrow handlebar and saddle that go in your anus.

I did some experimenting + research, and found that for a standard 22/23mm road tyre 100 PIS front and 110 PSI rear, is correct for my weight (varies slightly with specific tyre admittedly).
fast and smooth. :)
I am currently on 42mm winter tyres, which are knobbly as feck, have pointy metal studs, and are at a miserble 45 PSI.
Slow and uncomfortable. :(

Yonks ago, somewhere on this forum people were having a really good discussion on optimal tyre pressure for racing (i.e. fastest pressure). From what I remember the gist was that harder is not always faster (there was a point at which you could increase RR by over inflating) and there was a table that gave the optimal PSI for a given weight of rider. I've read what Sheldon has to say on the matter but I remember this table being more useful.
Can anyone recall the thread/article or know what I'm talking about? Much appreciated.
*Edit: while I'm at it wasn't there a table of RR's for different tyres?

I posted one. It was from a touring site, and gave front and rear pressures for various weights and tyre sizes.

Open pros are very solid. Not many rims would let you get away with an accidental 160 PSI.
Check for burrs, badly installed rim tape etc. But it could have just been pinched on instalation. Easy to do.

Initially assumed I had just pinched it as it was a brand new rim, no burrs and put on the rim tape myself..
Since I have had other (lower pressure) tyres in and had no problems.. One of life's little mysteries I guess.

I never cared about the Rim when pumping up my tyre ... they are metal ... the tyre is rubber I will always assume that the rubber upper limit is the one to be respected ..
and then I give it 20 psi extra.

The tyre pressure limit on road tyres, is often higher then that for road rims.
The metal may well be tougher than the rubber. But most of us dont mind are tyres deforming when we pump them up or sit on the bike. I'm not a big fan of my rims deforming though.

The pressure limit on clincher rims is all about the limitations of the rim/tyre hook interface rather than problems with the rim itself, no ?
Tubular rims don't seem to have a pressure limit (not that I've noticed), and limited by the max pressure of the tub (170psi for a Conti Sprinter)

Thats a fair point. But I do think clincher rims can be deformed slightly by high tyre pressure. Would'nt take more than a mm or so to loose the tyre. Tubular rims dont have a thin side wall, perpendicular to force direction, to worry about.
My point was that tyres and rims are'nt doing the same job, and they certianly dont have the same requirements.

bringing this up again, are 140 psi too much for campagnolo omega v's ?
my tyres (pariba provolution) are specified up to 145 psi, never thought before about the possibilty of the rim not being able to withstand that?
btw, I only put so much in because of lazyness, compensating future pressure loss. actually being fine with 120 rear / 110 front (is that too much for a 170 lbs rider)?

I don't see the point of inflating so high. I used to commute daily on Schwalbe Blizzard 23cs at 70psi and never got a pinch flat in 18 months using them. I weigh about 80kg and had at least another 5kg luggage every day. Heavier riders should just use wider tyres - proven to have better rolling resistance and far more comfort.

I've been doing 80psi for a week now.
But then my bike got Scobbled.
If your rim hasn't split, you can safely add another 10psi...
