  • Yes.

    And it's always valve first.

"happily, successfully, effectively not bowing to convention since 1970(or thereabouts)"

  • i know i'm a cnut,i've always been a cnut and always will be a cnut but it's good to know i'm not alone.it's pathetically cnutish but i was genuinely shocked to learn that i had been (and would continue to)replace tyre and tube wrongly after a puncture so whilst browsing in whs i came across bikeradar publication total bike maintenance and repair and on page 98 discovered that they suggest refitting tyre and tube exactly as wrongly as i do.i also saw that some fairly well revered people in the cycling world are contributors to this overpriced misleading piece of propaganda including a certain Mr Stone!Ah well

  • This is now all being blown out of proportion and this argument has been going around for years and has been spoke'n about at great length. Let forget about this rubber'ish argument and just chill out.

I agree, let's stop giving it any more tread. I hate to puncture your bubble, but putting the brakes on it is essential.

Wow. They wouldn't make such hideous mistakes with some decent authors.

    +1

  • Let's patch up our differences, and try not to blow this up out of all proportion.

You should try changing the tube on a Brompton. Bugger me, that is hard work. Luckily I have strong wrists. Well, one strong wrist anyway.

I had to do this yesterday. My weak wrist still hurts.

  • WARNING: THREAD DREDGING

I was about to post something with an almost identical title, but then up popped this thread.

I woke up today to find the sun was shining. Glorious. I'm starting work as a bike tour guide today with my mate's business, and I'm going to be paid to cycle round all day.

So, there I am, feeling all smug, cup of tea in hand, when I notice one of my SPD cleat things is missing a bolt. It was tough to release last night, so it must have just been twisting about. Anyhow, I figure I'll tighten the other bolt up like a bastard and it won't move, at least until I can get to a bike shop that sells bolts (I live next door to a bike shop, but it's dutch bikes and shoppers only).

I get the multi tool out and start tightening. Bit of creaking, from the tool as I'm tightening... and then SNAP! The bloody allen key broke. The extremely pointy sharp bit that stayed wedged in the cleat made a nice big hole in my hand between my finger and thumb. I'm going to be leaning on that bit of hand rather a lot today.

Moral: Don't buy cheap tools, and don't gloat. The universe doesn't like either.

  • where abouts are you working as a tour guide? ^

  • every time i gloat i check over my shoulder first

maybe it's the guns? you got toooo much power in them,

  • It's not Fat Tyres is it? They're pretty cool guys. I wish I spoke another language so I could do that sort of thing.

  • ha! I remember riding to work one day, bike was feeling sweet, It felt like I had unlimited power in my legs, sun was shining BANG! an on coming car decideds to try a Miami Vice style right turn across the road infront of me, £300 quid damage to the bike.

Last Friday I was heading to work, had that unlimited power in my legs, bike felt sweet and I thought to myself "ha! last time I felt like this It all went tits up" BANG! white van man in the outside lane who is parallel to me decides he's Steve McQueen and makes a left turn, broken window for him, broken hand for me, fair trade I thought. So now Im taking that feeling as a precognitive sign of some cunt thinking hes the stig.

  • Shit, sorry to hear that Mike I hope you fix up soon.

  • cheers moog, its just one of those things - I have broken that bone before so its prone to breaking, I might get some of those keirin kevlar knuckle gloves.

  • hael. That sounds nasty. Heal quickly and fully.

The Brooklyn Machine Works mtb gloves that teenslain wears might be the thing for you.

Wannabe - take care fo your cleats. Believe me on this one!

  • Mike, I use those keirin gloves on the track all the time, haven't tested them yet- perhaps they are just a sort of a spell against damage? Beer good for broken knuckles- I buy for you on Thurs?

  • Ha yeh, it's the guns fo' sho'. Haven't done any upper body exercise in months. Shitty old multi tool. Good job my tetanus jabs are bang up to date.

    Re-cycled -- in Paris
Daveypants -- not at fat tyres, but with some even coolerer guys, http://www.bikeabouttours.com/ They are number one out of 789 things to do in Paris on tripadvisor.com. Cheeky little dahon folders, loads of local knowledge, quiet roads, bit of history.

Brilliant morning's work, just tagging along on a tour -- if any of you lot are coming to Paris, get it booked, it's a great way to see the city.

    /spamming.

and as for cleats, cliveo -- new shoes and cleats next week, I hope. When I was twisting to get out it was just chewing up the shoe and twisting, so I've cranked it in nice and tight to make sure it can't go anywhere. Definitely want to avoid your saga!!
