  • Get physio. I had tendon problems just above my left knee a few years back and 3 or 4 sessions with the physio was enough to fix it. He had no problem with my riding whilst he treated me either.

  • I was rowing 6-7 hours a day for a whole week. . .

    Typical stroppy teenager...

    ? lol

    Bullshit will

Yeah i had the same as Rocker (will) in my wrist aswell and it felt like it was creaking or rubbing. All i did was rest it for a week or so and the rubbing feeling and tenderness faded

Fuck off you pouncy little twat! thats how long we were rowing 3 sessiong of 2 hours = 6 hours you fuckwit! oh and anyway stop buying shit you owe me money, you can 'pay me back' partially by getting those other pedals as well . . . as i want them

  • Funny in a way I feel agrieved with the damn thing and want to cycle tomorrow to teach it to HTFU.

I freely admit this is stupid, and will not do it.

Been lookng like a home curfew order case for the last two hours with a teatowel full of ice knotted around my ankle and the tendon is still twice the size of the other one.

  • sounds alot worse than what ben (jonesb05) had in spain (when we were rowing) his didnt swell up that bad. . . mind he did stop soon after it was hurting, be careful dammit, you dnt want to go f-ing it up for a long time. . .

  • I had thought that taking a whole week off the bike would have sorted this.

Quite entertained to read that tranfusing ones own blood back in is the accepted treatment.

I'd feel like I was emulating some of the great tdf riders...

  • The achilles tendon is the strongest tendon in your body and is perfectly capable of supporting your full bodyweight.

With running it's usually one of two causes, with cycling I'm not so sure :

    1) You are fully loading the achilles by putting all your weight on the ball of your foot (nothing wrong here) then adding additional load by contracting your calf to push hard on the pedal, in running caused by pushing off.

This is possible I guess when cycling, if you're doing a lot of work with your calves it may be that your seat's a touch too high forcing you to plantar-flex the foot. Your knees should not lock out when your foot's at 6pm, 155 degrees max or summut I think, do you have achy calves post-ride?

    2) Heavy pronation/supination, when running heavy pronation/supination causes the tendon to shift laterally left and right resulting in tendonitis, not good considering it's probably loaded with bodyweight when it's doing this.

Again I guess this is possible when cycling if your cleats aren't adjusted properly.

So yeah in summary, check seat height, why not lowering it a bit for a few weeks and see. Check cleat adjustment, don't pedal with your calves. Same advise as everyone else really.

    Wonder why...

  • Interesting Prime Heretic- calves do not hurt but I have never been happy with the pedals on my road bike- Time RXS.

It may well be user error but I've never been able to adjust them so that my pedallong angle is comfortable for a whole ride, which I have with ATAC's/SPD's.

Maybe I should get the Speedplay Zero's I actually wanted when I thought I'd save a couple of quid and get the RXS...

  • Wonder why...

    sorry mr platini/grammar nazi =P

  • I would strongly advise getting it checked out, I damaged mine years ago but thought nothing of it but a month later after it was still agony I went to the hospital and the told me I had a minor tear in the tendon, furthermore it turned out I had severs disease rather like Osgood-Schlatter that some people experience in the knees. I had physiotherapy and the like but it was still tender for a couple of years after, be warned... I guess the moral of the story is if it still hurts over a long time you should got get it checked out or be prepared to face the fact it may be painful on the future. Hope it gets better soon and you get riding again! Jabba

Yup that could well be it then. Probably a good idea to dump those pedals if they don't feel right, as people are saying proper tendon injuries can be serious.

Re Speedplas, I have some, they're ok kinda over hyped IMHO. Not really worth the premium you pay, what you save in weight on the pedal you gain in the cleats, also worst cleats ever for walking round, though in their favour the adjustment is very good. Maybe borrow some pedals and see how it goes?

thats nothing like Osgood-Schlatter disease! i have it, its where a bit of bones breaks off the knee or somewhere and fuses below the knee cap and you knee swells after excersise its a pain in the arse. . . but much different to a tendon tear!

  • poor old dammit. You just don't seems to be having much luck at the moment.. to the doctors with you!! You need to be well for track day.

  • Next stupid question- weather is beautiful, can I strap my ankle up and ride with it, or do I really have to get the train?

  • . . . by all means go for it if you want to inflame it and make your recovery period longer!

  • Meh.

Just wondering whether or not the cause of this might have been me learning to skid fairly recently- on 49/15.

Like anyone new to skidding I did it rather a lot, and I pull up with my right foot after moving my weight forward.

So thinking about what Prime Heretic said it might be that this caused a rotating twisting action with a fair amount of energy behind it as I was skidding a high gear?

  • Get the train and give your rear wheel, cranks and new seat post to me.

  • And you will then give your tendons to me?

  • rest it

if it is causing you this much bother then clearly its an issue that needs to be addressed

get a cyclefit done and see a physio who understands cycling (Graham Anderson at Balance in Clapham if my memory serves me right)

  • I'd love to James but put simply I do not have the money for that at the moment.

  • It will keep you off the bike.
