out of interest anyone tried the icetoolz track chain whip evans sell for £6.99? According to their website it support 1/8 chains...
Anyone with any opinions on the Ice Toolz track (1/8") chain whip? Or able to recommend a good, cheap alternative (yes, I know the Shimano chain whip is the dogs bollox and will last for years but am a bit low on cash at the moment so something for under a tenner would be nice!)?
Ta.

Just bite the bullet and get the Shimano one from hubjub.
Buy cheap buy twice

Recently got the £6.99 Ice Toolz 1/8 chain whip, works fine. It's not like these are precision engineering tools; just some chain on a handle. I really can't see what an expensive one would offer over a cheap one. Spanners, sockets, screwdrivers - yes get as decent as you can afford, but unless you are using it a lot really don't see the point of spending much on one.

Maybe you could conduct a survey of chainwhip users. Perhaps there's Shimano chainwhip cult?

1+, the Shimano one is pretty expensive, but it's a fantastic little tools, the cheaper one I've tried before simply doesn't feel, what's the word? solid I suppose when being used.
Is it entirely possible that it's enough to make changing sprocket an enjoyable account?

And by the time you've bought a cheap chain whip and a cheap lock ring tool (or fucked a few lock rings with the hammer and screwdriver method) the £25 for the shimano one starts to sound pretty reasonable.

oh very, it's easy to fuck-up a lockring if you're not careful with the cheap one.

I had a Shimano one from my old roadbike, wasn't 1/8th compatible. Until I had a spare bit of chain, used a 1/8th pin and forces it through the '32 link and now it is. It's pretty bloody solid too!

wouldn't it be entirely feasable to make your own?

probably not much cheaper unless you have the bits lying around.

I find it hard to beleive that there is no chainwhip list...

I did my own one, it's easy to make and very solid as you can choose the compoments, only problem is not as nice, I will try to post some pics

I've got a Park Tools 3/32 chain whip, when I needed to tighten a track sprocket I borrowed a Shimano (maybe DA?) one from a friend and it was a lot more user friendly than mine in terms of the shape of the handle etc.

i just examined my chain whip (from mtb days) and i think it 3/32", but i'm not sure as i have been s/s for ages and so presumably had a 1/8" cog on my mtb, but, anyway, i guess i can whip off the 3/32" links and replace with 1/8" spare chain links?

It's hard not to make the link between me and a hollywood actor :-)
it originates from Chelsea Bull, my hayday nickname as a sunday league player.
