I have a good and funny U-locking story, sadly it's not mine.
My friend Gertie is a 5'5" welshman, with a plucky smile and a very nice Cannondale, he's one of the nicest people I've ever met. Oh, and he's career courier.
A few years back he was riding down Oxford street having a screaming match with a black cab driver who cut him off. In the heat of the moment he took his d-lock out (we are in England, folks) and swung it against the windscreen of the cab. The small crack it made became a small series of cracks, then the whole windscreen went.
At the point the cab driver decides to get out of the cab, so he opens the door and starts getting out....and keeps getting out....and keeps getting out, until this mountain of a man is standing in front of our small Welsh lock wielding hero.
Fortuntly, an undercover police officer steps out of the crowd and places Gertie under arrest. He say's it the only time in his life he has been happy to see the police. -

Haha, I know Gertie, (met hime a few times at rolla events), really uber laid back guy, I just can't imagine him getting that angry!

I can't see this beating being justified at all. It's so brutal... He might have been grilling him, grabbing his bike.. but an old dude getting battered by the d-lock like that... and then he just burns off.. not cool.
This comment was funny though:
"Good on you for filming, making no attempt to stop it, and then making no attempt to check the old fella is ok.
You must be proud
Now go do a skid! "

What makes people think that behaving like that is acceptable?
you can kill someone with a punch let alone a d-lock of steel; yeah, fully worth going to jail for mate, what a bellend.
100 quid says he's down the coffee shop with his geeky mates bragging about it whilst updating his blog from his macbook.

I had some stupid ipodestrian step blithely out in front of me and then give me verbal abuse for having the temerity to shout at him. The laugh was quite literally on the other side of his face when I pulled out my chainsaw and chopped him into little bits. He'll think twice about doing the same again.
Then there was this other guy who asked me what was wrong. I fixed him with a hard stare, and in my pithiest, most scorn-filled voice I cursed, "your tie." I do wonder if this was a bit of an overreaction to be honest.

I can't see this video, as apparently you have to be signed in on YouTube, and I can't be bothered to register. But the descriptions in this thread are enough for me, anyway. It does sound like a case of 'heard about using a D-lock as a weapon so many times, perhaps on immature bike forum threads, now I really have to put it into practice'. It's obviously got very little to do with the guy being a cyclist. It's just assault and ABH/GBH. Had he had another weapon to hand, he probably would have used that.

Should have smacked him harder and a few more times imo

I hope you're not serious.
I don't know what happened but massive overreaction all the same. We all get pissed off with peds occasionally. Just ride off. Let some steam off by riding a little bit faster or something. Jeez.

Dick who filmed it is giving it large over the comments - I say we get a contigent together and track this mofo down and film him being beaten with his own fcuking Frappamochacuntacino and fruit toast....

Bang out of order but good skills by the cyclist, still holding onto his bike while crunching away at the fellas boat

Y'know, I read all these comments before I watched the video. It isn't that big a deal. The bike guy tried to walk away at least twice that we could see on the video and is quite obviously telling the guy to back up. He keeps following on in a way that to me shows that he won't back off without being made to, so he gets made to. Really isn't any worse than the shit you see on every high st in every town in the country on a friday night.
Cyclist shouldn't't have used the d lock tho'. No call for that. The dude in his face wasn't big enough or aggressive enough to justify that.

If only I had a penny for every time someone got battered in the face with a D-Lock
I'd have 2 penniesjust my 2p,

That cyclist is a pure twat..Well both of em really

From what I could see in that video, I come to a couple of conclusions.
A D-Lock makes for a clumsy weapon, and the way the guy has to pull the hand back and then project it all the way indicates it's hard to direct it accurately. If I ever get into a similar situation and can help it, I won't use a D-lock as weapon, but would rather opt for something smaller and lighter.
Also, I won't keep walking in to someone that has a hard object in his hand. And if someone tries to swing at me like that, that is he pulls the fist back with a hard object in it, I hopefully won't just stand there. Instead I'll try to either move out of the way or tear his f***in head off before he can take the swing.
But most importantly I hopefully will look at what the guy has in his hands, if I am in a potentially aggressive situation. Could have just as well been a knife, a screwdriver or something similarly dangerous.
Ohh yeah, the ped is an idiot and the cyclists is a cunt!

You can't see what really transpires, as they move round the corner at the critical time, so its hard to say what happens and who kicks off first.
BUT: If I was the cyclist and the guy started getting physical on me I respond with force required to prevent myself from comming to physical harm. If that mean hitting a guy in the face with a mini d then so much. The messenger is clearly not so strong as the blows don't floor the asian fella, so the use of a weapon to "win" is "sensible".
Just to note I'd of tried everything to avoid a fight. But if I'm going to have to get in one the other bloke is going down hard if I can get my way. Whats the point in a gentle punch in the face?

I have actually witnessed first hand an assault involving a d-lock to the head, and it resulted in over a month in Hospital for the victim, who then spent the better part of a year learning how to do everything again.
I know we all joke about it, but the fact is using a D-Lock as a weapon against another person, is a quick way to find yourself in jail, and the victim in hospital/dead. I can imagine instances where i would use mine in self defence if i was going to be bike jacked, or taking off the door mirror of a cab/car that tries to kill me, but never in a situation like this.
James i have to say what you did Happy Slapping the ped was pretty stupid, not that i disagree with your motives, but if you got caught you would be in serious shit, and what you did could have caused more damage than you think - you are pretty lucky you got away with it. Not worth going to jail over a stupid ped

It was pretty stupid, and very immature, but I slapped him with the intention of knocking his phone out of his hand and/or annoying him a lot, not to cause him injury, there's quite a difference, but you're right....its definitely not worth going to jail over a ped.
Dude, I screamed/shouted/made loud human siren noises (my personal favourite), but the twat was so arrogant he decided to walk out regardless after he saw me approaching him at considerable speed, so I just gave him a friendly reminder that he has to share the roads, and that he doesn't own them ;)
Yeah there's a lot of similarities here, you hit a lambo intentionally, I hit a white van man intentionally (it was the better option than oncoming traffic). I'm generally a pretty laid back person, especially so on my bike as I enjoy riding it so much, but sometimes people just take the piss.....we should go for a beer sometime!
