  • Ok, I've been building a fixie and it's finally finished and at the shop waiting for the unbelievable labour cost to be paidfor it being put together, and i get home from school and my mum says to me, "Alex, you can't ride you new bike, it's too dangerous." And I'm thinking to my self: WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?!?!?!?
So after a bit of arguing she says she thinks its to dangerous, and we'll have a talk this evening when my dad gets back.
I'm 15, its got a front brake on it and I'm running on 41tx18t.
I need help persuading them to let me ride.
    Any one got any advice?

  • Do as you are told you little scroat and mind your fucking language, off to your room pronto......

  • I sort of feel your pain..being 21 and to this very day my dad costantly says its too dangerous etc you know the drill.

My advice..Tell your rents its good for keeping healthy etc all that positive fitness shit..Dude wear a helmet if you have too..Safety first right

  • This might work: get them to call London Cycling Campaign and ask if riding fixed gear is dangerous; I know a few of the people who work there ride fixed so they should get a positive response from people whose opinions your parents will probably trust over yours

  • Your legs are a better stopping mechanism than a rim brake, especially in the wet. Seriously.

  • promise to wear a helmet, have lights, put reflective bits on your bag....usual stuff.

  • Get a back break. simples

  • Is it just that there is no standard rear brake?

    Add one!

    Even if it's fake.

  • Get a quote for a geared bike...

I'd go with Rosie's suggestion. Here's the relevant link for you http://www.cycletraining.co.uk/contact_us/index.php

  • do you pay the rent/mortgage?
do you put food on the table?
    you ungrateful little scrote.
you deserve a smack in the mouth for giving your mother back-chat.

  • I'll have a word with her.

  • Dear Mum, when I am riding my fixed gear bike I am very content which means I am not tempted to hang about on the streets causing mischief, drinking alcopops, smoking cigars, shaggin, sniffing glue, going to raves, befriending skinheads, happy slapping, ad infinitum.

    best reply yet.

Fuck it! Sell that bike pronto!

  • I'm with dmc. Get a brake on the back.. Even if you don't use it, you'll be keeping the parents happy.

  • I'll have a word with her.

    Finally!!

  • dibs...

  • tell dad you get that funny feeling in your tummy when you look at boys, the only thing that stops it is when you ride your fixie it makes you feel like a real man ...he will drive you down to condor and buy you a new pista! ...BOSH!

  • i would take your mother out for a lovely seafood dinner and NEVER call her again

  • do a road safety course(their very good and free), buy a helmet, ask them to buy you a ped/car

  • do a road safety course(their very good and free), buy a helmet, ask them to buy you a ped/car

    word!

  • Finally!!

To be honest, I'd happily do this but my offer was actually a rather weak "ya mum" joke.

The Bendix/DMC zone made suggestions with much more credence.

  • there's only one thing for it,

While it is unusual for children to divorce parents, the fact is that the laws in many lands do make provisions for this type of legal severance of the obligations that exist between parent and child. Known as emancipation, the process makes it possible for children to divorce parents when specific circumstances are present. If the court of jurisdiction determines that it is in the best interests of the minor child for the divorce to take place, the decree is granted and the parents no longer have any claim to or responsibility for the minor child.
It is important to note that a minor divorce from parents is not the only means whereby an underage child may obtain emancipation. If the child marries with the permission of the parents, he or she no longer is legally the responsibility of the parents. In like manner, choosing to join the Armed Forces, again with the permission of the parents, will also end the legal responsibility of the parents and allow the minor child to become accountable for his or her actions. In both these situations, emancipation of the minor child takes place with the knowledge and consent of the parents and is not considered a punitive action.
When minors choose to divorce parents, there must be compelling reasons for the emancipation to be granted. Often, the reasons include evidence of some type of abuse or neglect on the part of the parents. Along with a demonstrated lack of responsible parental behavior, the minor child must meet several basic requirements before any court will consider an action grant emancipation. The child must be at least fourteen years of age, have a reliable source of................blah blah

    blah

    sorry if i missed something.
