  • fuck you, fuck everyone, fuck polo.

what is the point! Over 200 quid on flights and accomodation, for nothing.

  • which tornado is that bailing at 1:26 looks like a hard fall

  • 2:18 - clear check into the boards!

  • 2:51, so that's the crazy Hungarian dude? Both players fighting, 2 min penalty.

  • It's Erin, she was doing a celebratory crash, I did the exact same thing earlier that day after Adam scored.

Agreed, fighting = 2 on 2 for the rest of the game, I missed all this drama!

Yeah, now I see the video, I can see why people were constantly asking me, have you seen the crazy Hungarian dude? He should have been expelled much earlier in the tourney, if that & the dissent to Angie was typical of his on-court behaviour.

  • i love that ale hugs him at the end with his helmet still on, just in case ...

Wow, he did that to Ale's team? Should have been expelled for gross stupidity.

  • afaik, there should be zero tolerance for fighting. Instant ejection from tournament for offender player at a minimum, or even instant ejection for the whole team?

  • definate kicked out of game. but as jb showed, you can get it wrong, whole tourney would have been harsh for jb.

    LHBPA rules:

*13.6.4 – Ejection for the remainder of the game.
13.6.4.1 – This penalty is reserved for fighting and willfully dangerous play that either results in or is deemed as having the potential to cause serious physical harm.

To judge the incident shown correctly, you would need to see the whole game. I suspect from what I was told by various people that the guy in red (the crazy Hungarian) was pulling cheap shots all through the game - what sparked the fight was a rabbit punch to the kidneys - and therefore you have to wonder whether the ref on the game had control. I see stuff like that, and then I think about people telling that I am too strict when I ref...

  • so basically fighting is fine, as long as it's towards the end of the game

Well, if it had been me reffing that game, and it was near the end, I would have insisted on a carry-over penalty - ie, start the next game with a 2 minute penalty.

  • Hah, our rules don't really cover ejection from a tourney, should probably add that after this season...

Carry-over penalty's don't exist within any ruleset (yet) though do they Bill?

  • I don't know, Dave, I did not see the guy play at all until the game in which he got expelled from the tournament, so I just can't say how bad he was, but based on what little I saw, and this video, I can safely say I don't think he would lasted long any court I was reffing.

And, yeah, we do need to add something about expulsion.

"Expulsion from tournament: in cases of gross misconduct, the head ref or tournament organiser can expel the offending player from the remainder of the tournament."

I also think that the team for which the player was playing should be forced to play the rest of the tourney with 2 players. That way, the team-mates have an interest in restraining unruly team members.

I know it seems unfair on the rest of the team, but, hey, it's your team, take responsibility, and don't play with some dick who's going to leave the opposition with bruises & cuts & broken kit.

  • Carry-over penalty's don't exist within any ruleset (yet) though do they Bill?

Nope, but they obviously need to!

    agree completely

  • The ref for that game, with the fight in, was the worst ref I have ever experienced.

He told me before our game against Toros that he believed 'polo players ref the game themselves, on court.' He said he was just there to count score and take time. In hindsight I should have reported that to you Bill and had him ejected from reffing duties.

He also let the crowd decide a contentious goal, by how hard they cheered for 'a goal?' or 'not a goal?'

At EU Champs level, that is just ridiculous.

  • He also let the crowd decide a contentious goal, by how hard they cheered for 'a goal?' or 'not a goal?'

That is extremely weak and would have had me fuming, even if the ref didn't see the contentious move and neither of the goal refs had anything to offer then it's a goal as the ball is in the net and there's nothing to call. It should never be a popularity contest (the crowd sees what they want to see and are fairly polarised in my opinion).

  • I think in the refs talk before a tourney it should be stressed that you ref to the rules of the tournament, not your own rules.

Rik told Tomasito that a foul against him counted as 'Karma' this weekend. What is going on? Polo reffing is actually getting worse.

If he saw both incidents and recognised after the first that revenge might be taken, the whistle should have been blown at the first incident.

Don't mean to be singling people out, I'm sure I made reffing errors this weekend too. Just these are some examples that illustrate my gripe that people need to be able to ref to rules that they might not agree with.

  • Agreed, we can add rules as the game develops and as people think of them, but reffing "your own rules" adhoc just confuses things and creates an unfair match (how can you play within rules you're not aware of, etc).

  • He told me before our game against Toros that he believed 'polo players ref the game themselves, on court.' He said he was just there to count score and take time. In hindsight I should have reported that to you Bill and had him ejected from reffing duties.

I wish you had. I am heartily sick of 'refs' saying that stuff. Not good enough, and this type of attitude can lead to fights & serious injuries.

  • oh god, the exact same video made 1000 times before, except (drumroll) with more lens flare.
...and for fucksake toddy whats with that accent?

  • Ha!
