  • Are there any active discount codes?

(You know, to make it less pricey...)

  • I just browsed the photos associated with the sale and it's the first time I notice - is it common for Rapha to promote glamorous people riding road bikes in the mountains with no helmet on?

  • Umm that's like asking is it common for Hollywood to promote extreme violence towards everyone. It's a friggin picture, not a safety statement!

  • ordered stuff on Thursday evening, arrived this morning

the seat of the city trousers does not look too conspicuously different

It's not about the safety. How would you consider someone with a $$$$ bike with no helmet when you see him riding on the road? I'd think "what a tool" before admiring the epicness. Maybe it only shows I'm not the target audience, even if I like their products (which are a bit pricey unfortunately).

  • Rapha sell caps. They do not sell helmets.

  • I see many people riding expensive bikes without a helmet. My first thoughts are not "what a tool." I would rather people ride bikes first and foremost, cheap or expensive.

Cyclicsts on average live 3-4 years longer and have considerable health benefits from the activity, though of course this does come with a potential risk of head injury. This health risk is hugely exceeded by the health benefit.

In the same way as nearly all sporting activity has a potential risk but a greater gain.

If it is not about safety, what is your concern - that the people in the pictures are not getting the aero benefit of an expensive helmet after their expenditure on a bike?

  • I don't know, I was wondering if the Rapha audience (that rides road bikes, I'm not talking about urban/commuting/transportation/leisure cycling) prefers to see people riding without a helmet.

When I see someone with no helmet on a mountain road my feeling is usually that he's not really knowing what he does. I agree it is certainly as stupid and arbitrary as thinking "What a badass". So I was wondering about why they do it, if it was viewed as more glamorous by the Rapha customers. AndyP's explanation about their product range is simpler though.

Chevron Tourette Syndrome is a real social handicap. I'm aware man, I support the cause.

  • I agree, it's contagious. We've all caught it from Pisti, and you'll get it, too, if you stay on here. :)

Clearly it does, otherwise Rapha would change their marketing material. As it is, they're raking in the cash hand over fist.

The american part of the rapha audience in particular get their knickers in a right twist when they see no helmets. Personal rider choice though innit.

  • What is the practical difference between the wind jacket and the pro team jacket? It seems like the pro jacket is cut closer and is a bunch more spendy. Anything else?

they said they had them ride without helmets during photo shoot sessions. And remember its only 10 years since it became a uci rule

  • ^ thanks, James

  • Mission: Prepare for Winter.

The classic soft shell is, I believe, widely considered to be too warm unless the temperature has a - in front of it.

How about the Pro-Team jacket? Anyone got any experience of one?

  • Your belief is wrong. The softshell can be used in temperatures under 10 degrees celsius without over heating, with just a baselayer beneath it. For temperatures below zero I tend to put on another layer.

  • I stand corrected, sitting down.

What size do you take Andy- I'm on the limit between M and L, and am vacilating.

  • I'm large. You're welcome to try it on if you like?

Or, order both and send one back (won't cost you anything).

  • Thanks for the offer- if I order it I'll go for the large in that case.

I'm debating whether I actually need it currently, I wore my Endura jacket through the coldest part of last year and it was fine- but I bought it when I was a couple of stone heavier.

  • Got both pro team and softshell in medium if you want to have a look for feel and size.
For winter use I would prefer the pro team of the two. The fit makes it more of a cross between a really thick jersey and a jacket.

  • I am now conflicted.

  • Phew, got a grey rain jacket and touring shorts very recenty but neither of them are in the sale which makes me feel good! Very tempted to get some socks though. And maybe even some trousers. Hmmm.
