  • I think Rapha is good quality, well made kit for those that can afford it, and is worn by lot's of people who wear it for this, unfortunately it's also worn by 'all the gear and no idea' poseurs...

This bag will be worn by people wishing to pose and have a bag that looks like a courier bag, but with literally zero functionality, but this is not the point it's for carrying your stuff while you walk your bike around.

    Teenslain has one......

  • I think that's generally the case with accessories - exclusive brands tend to have large ranges of rather mediocre accessories at cheaper price points that allow consumers who wouldn't normally be able to afford something from that brand to "buy into" it. (pukes)

See: glasses, bags, scarves, misc trinkets.

I think a real master of this multi-tiered product offering is Marc Jacobs, who pushes out the most unbelievable tat under his "M" range.

  • Those bags are excellent and practical. I use one to carry my hair straighteners.

I've never seen a courier using a bag that looks remotely like that. Have you?

    And do people wear bags?

  • Fuck me, we've got people who dress in jeans too tight to walk in and plimsoles discussing the most effective street fighting techniques, and this dirge of a thread stretching to 80 plus pages. This place really is disappearing up its own arsehole...

  • Have you read the effective locks thread? This is a gem in comparison.

That one's got Scoble and Gaggle written all over it...so no

  • Wise words.

  • Scott you could say the same about the Paul Smith bikes - $4000?! Or anything else Paul Smith that isn't clothes.

  • But they're Mercian and tend to cost an arm and a leg already (however nice they may be).
Mercian are hugely desirable and tend to keep value = a better investment.

A Super Vigorelli normally costs £2,300 (give and take) so basically you're paying £700 extra for a
Paul Smith bike, not sure if it's reasonable or not but if that's what swings your boat so be it.

  • what swings your boat so be it.

    Is that a mixte metaphor?

  • ...and if anyone justifies it by saying 'it's fashion dahling'....it looks like something you'd buy in Laura Ashley! :]

Well, it is fashion darling. It's a nicely made bag and it's Paul Smith. I personally hate find the print abhorrent and the idea of a gentile courier bag a bit lame, but that's just my taste. Yes it's not 100% functional, but then why should it be? Not all shoes feature the latest technological innovations, do they? Not everyone wants a bag made of plastic and Cordura.

  • Heres my code I'm not going to use, so anyone welcome to it: £10 off £100 order at Rapha,

Because it costs £225 and is aimed at cyclists...that's why it should be functional.
It's not as simple as just materials...it's basic design faults.
Surely the most basic function of a bag is simply to protect it's contents?
A bag supposedly designed to keep what is being carried dry and safe and it has two big gaping holes to let water run straight in. It's little things like that which could have actually had some thought put into them and then make it far easier to justify paying the extra simply because it has Paul Smith signatures on.
It's the general lack of care and thought about what a bag supposedly aimed at cyclists needs to achieve at the most basic level that makes the price tag even more ridiculous.

But then It's Rapha/Paul Smith...like there was ever going to be any concern about actual function. :]

  • What bother me most about the Paul Smith bag is that the photo is rather mediocre.

Scott, would you says the same thing about the Freitag bags.

  • Scott, would you says the same thing about the Freitag bags.

Which bit of what i said and in relation to which aspect of Freitag bags?
Gotta be a bit more specific than that Ed. :]

  • That bags orrible.

When are laura ashley moving into the courier bag market?
my mate had some nice curtains from them.....
    ....or something.

  • scott's got the hump, 'cos rapha have a quicker turn-around time on their bags

  • I'm dealing in quality, not quantity. ;]

  • I'm converting these to Laura Ashley overshoes, in time for the winter season.

This time next year I'll be a millionaire!

I wouldn't mind this bag as a fashion accessory if it had slightly different shape. I don't know... Bit longer and shallower, to look more like a bag for a bloke and not a fucking handbag.

  • This thread is fantastic, isn't it?

  • It is 100% epic win. :-)
