Interesting point about price-point and marketing. I suspected it was designed primarily to be a jersey - this explains why I needed to size up (for my use with a jersey underneath).

Hmmm, this is where I need the jersey (jacket!) family tree, a whiteboard, and one of those pointy sticks. ...I’ll get back to explain this later and dig up a few older jerseys!

My layering dilemma is;
I used to really like the PTJ, I once got soaked in it and extremely cold, with baselayer and brevet jersey underneath and after this it lost some of its shine.
I now favour, Baselayer, brevet ls, insulated gilet and carry Shakedry in case of rain. More a warm stuff to keep warm and a proper waterproof to stay dry and as a result warm.
When it’s really cold though the brevet jersey lacks a bit for me.
Is there a warmer jersey than the brevet?
Shadow seems like a possible addition but how would it be with a Shakedry over the top?? -

Anyone got the Gore-tex pullover? How waterproof and practical are they

You're going to boil. Unless it's relentlessly pissing down for hours on end a baselayer plus a softshell (my go-to attire for wet Danish winters) is all you need.

I like the idea of that but it gives me the fear. Which softshell?

YouTube vids?
-
• #35059
Fear not. I still use my ancient Softshell that became the Classic Softshell, I'm not sure what's the equivalent nowadays. Been significantly below freezing temp with it, as well just above freezing but with sleet and heavy winds and I have been fine.

Everyone's approach to layering here just seems to simply mention 'baselayer' but not what type, synthetic or merino, long sleeve or short sleeve. Personally, I find this makes the key difference to the second and third layers and staying warm. I have three jackets: Brevet Insulated, Lightweight Shadow and a Race Cape which cover most of my needs (I almost never need the Race Cape). Also a two-way zip is imperative to heat management.
My baselayer approach goes roughly:
Hot summer: PT SL baselayer
Mild summer: PT SS baselayer
Spring / Autumn: Merino mesh / non mesh SS baselayer
Winter: Merino mesh / non mesh LS baselayer
F500 / Snow (Y R U EVN RDING): Merino deep winter / roll neck baselayer -

Isn't the roll neck one just the winter, i.e. non-deep, baselayer? I thought the deep winter one was the one with the in-built balaclava type hood.
-
• #35062
I don't believe the balaclava or the old merino roll neck exists anymore, the deep winter has a high collar and a windproof panel on the front now.

Ah, my Rapha Fu is once again out of date!

truly the worst thing about the rapha website is the models using their summer bikes in winter promo shoots

The white arm band is the same gore tex Shakedry fabric. It’s the printable version, the rest of the black is the regular fabric. It’s technically the first use of the printable gore tex fabric in the world (before the romance swimming pool one)
100% waterproof -

Maybe they were bikepacking. According to the Rapha website, the only gloves suitable for bikepacking are the Brevet short-fingered gloves. Might as well ride without gloves at all for all the thermal insulation they'll provide.

So this is the NEW PTTJ?!

Got any anecdotes behind the og lightweight (I think) jersey? Mesh strip down the back middle for a lols griddy tan on your back. Centre rear zip to access epic full width pocket. It was a piece of kit I got a lot of use out until it unravelled itself and faded away.

I'm after a softshell type jacket for when it's colder but dry. I'd like something that I can wear with a base layer when it's milder and an extra layer or two when it's really cold. What's the go to? Nothing too insulated I guess.
-
• #35071
I've just got the Pro Team Winter Jacket (in purple! Jazzy!) and a long sleeve Pro Team baselayer for exactly this.
-
• #35072
I was looking at a couple of the Pro Team Winter Jacket's on eBay actually! It's not too warm for autumn/spring use with a light layer underneath then?
-
• #35073
I'd personally only be wearing it when under 10 degrees but it depends how hot/cold you run. I tend to go for a long sleeve jersey and the Brevet Insulated Gilet (best bit of kit ever) in anything warmer.
-
• #35074
PTJs and all their iterations are for 10 degrees and lower. I boil when I wear it in anything above 10
-
• #35075
Yes 10degree or lower with merino base layer
Also agree the brevet insulated gilet is fantastic & one of my favourite bits of kit
Just beat me to it G.
There were many discussions over having a hybrid jacket/Jersey category for the PTJ and various other products that most people wear as a Jersey (base layer only under) but function closer to a jacket.
As fabric technology has developed there are more and more in the market allowing huge flexibility of use depending on personal preference.
